PW was cooperative and seemed sincere. He was alert and coherent.
Information seems reliable.

12th Division: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Inf Regts. (No other numerical designation available.)
2nd Infantry Regiment: 3 Rifle Bn’s.
Each Rifle Battalion: 3 Rifle Companies and Mortar Co.
Each Rifle Company: 3 Rifle Plat’s.
Each Rifle Platoon: 3 Rifles 5qds.
Each Rifle Squad: 9 men.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
2nd Regiment Headquarters was last seen leaving TONGWHA (CS9831) 10 Jan 51 toward the North. The Regiment had arrived in TONGWHA during the night of 10 Jan 51 and departed hastily early the next morning.
PW’s platoon while sleeping in the hills, was contacted by a runner with orders to back to the north.
PW heard that the 1st and 3rd Regiments had been located in areas near the 2nd Regiment.
The 7th Division was believed to be located in areas approx 2 Km NW of FUIJU (16 Jan 50).
PW deserted his unit 17 Jan 51 and was captured by a patrol of the NK 7th Division, approx 4 Km South of KGEJU 16 Jan 51 and was taken to the political action of the 7th Division located 2 Km NW of WONJU.
PW noticed many guards in this area and came to the conclusion that the 7th Division was being bivouacked here.
Objectives and missions of the V Corps was unknown.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted into the 33rd Corps (Sic) as a laborer, 16 Sep 50 at KWANGJU.
Remained in the immediate area until orders to retreat north were received, o/a 30 Sep 50.
Approx one battalion of laborers and many North Korean officers travelled through the SOBAEK and TAEBAK mountain ranges and secondary roads while retreating.
They arrived at a location approx 20 Km South of KANGGYE o/a 15 Nov 50.
PW and an unknown number of laborers were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Regiment, 12th Division which was located here. The remaining laborers were assigned to various units of the 12th Division which were located in this general area. Division Headquarters was located approximately 40 Km East of KANGGYE.
PW received one week of Infantry training and was issued his weapon and uniform.
PW, 8 days after arriving here, departed with the entire 2nd Regiment for the South, over mountain trails and secondary roads, travelling only during the night (no place names available until the 38th parallel was reached).
The Regiment crossed the 38th parallel o/a 30 Dec 50 and passed through HONGCH’ON (DS0373) before arriving at YONGWHA on 10 Jan 51. No enemy contact was made by the Regiment.
The 2nd Regiment was last seen returning toward the North on 10 Jan 51 for unknown reasons, when PW deserted.

6. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Each soldier carried approx 4 to 5 pounds of uncooked rice when they departed from an KANGGYE area. Whenever the rice supply ■■nt low, they were replenished from nearby town and villages. An average of 1 KG of rice was received daily with occasional beans or corn. Two meals were received daily. No food was served during the day for unknown reasons.
Since entering South KOREA, PW’s unit had not been in action and their original issue of 200 rounds per man was still intact.

7. MORALE:
Approximately 3 men of PW’s Platoon deserted.
Morale was low due to forced marches and cold weather. PW knew of 2 cases in which the men froze to death. There may have been others, as the unit commanders withheld this sort of information.

8. CCF INFORMATION:
PW saw no CCF troops. He knew of no coordinating planes between the NKA and the CCF.

9. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
Runners were employed by companies.
Battalion and above were believed to use telephones.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW surrendered. PW’s home is in South KOREA and he entered the NKA against his will.
b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. PW saw leaflets on 15 Jan 51 North of WONJU, but was unable to read them as it was written in Chinese.
c. Can you describe what they said?

e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcast? What did they say or do?
