After heavy air bombardment by the UN Force, 2nd Co was practically annihilated. PW intending to surrender came out in the open and gave himself up.
a. Chronology:
O/a 18 Jan 51 after retreating from WONJU, the 12th Div with an estimated strength of 12,000 men, set defensive positions N of HOENGSONG.
1st Bn, 2nd Regt at CHIGOL (DS0258) with Bn Hq there, with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Hv Wpn Co dispersed around it. Each Co had 180 men except the Hv Wpn Co which had 90. All were armed, either rifles (70-100 rd ea), automatic rifles (300 rd ea), LMG (700 rd ea). Hv Wpn Co had 3 HMG with personnel all armed with rifles (70-100 rd ea).
2nd Bn (700 men) stayed with the Regt Hq, located 6 km N of CHIGOL in unk village and the 3rd Bn was situated just behind the Regt Hq acting as a reserve unit. Div Hq was located 12 km N of CHIGOL. All this information was passed on to PW from the 2nd Co CO.
After Bn arrived in CHIGOL, they dug air-raid shelters and stayed under cover from air observation constantly. Every day troops received Political Training, briefing on mistakes made during past battles and prevention of making same errors and morale lectures.
5 Feb 51 1st Co was alerted, assembled and ordered to move to HOENGSONG as an advance party to locate a more favorable bivouac site where food was more plentiful. According to the CO briefing, food was getting to be critical. The advance party mission was to find food and then contact the Bn Hq.
5 Feb 51, 1st Co arrived 500 meter from HOENGSONG. At this time PW observed the 1st Regt of the 12th Div engaged in battle. On their left flank, observed 2 Bn of troops (estimated as about 1300 men) which he found out from the 1st Co CO that they were elements of the 6th Div.
Immediately after he observed all this, the 1st Co received heavy air bombardment and they were practically annihilated. Also heard that the CCF was in CHUNCHON.
b. Medical:
No sickness among troops in Bn.
c. Morale:
Very low, because during their advance they were never provided transportation and never issued overcoats.
d. Replacement:
All replacements received were captured ROK troops turned over by CCF.
