FIELD REPORT (163 - MISDI - 0285) 13 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Not recommended for further interrogation. Evaluation: F-6
PW fairly cooperative.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission: 10th Div mission when leaving the 38th Parallel was to cut UN MSR and fight behind UN defense line. Their ultimate objective was TAEGU.

b. Strength of Unit:
(1) Original Strength: O/a 7 Dec 50 at HWACHON, NORTH KOREA.
10th Div - 8000 men
10th Div Hq - 250 men
Code Name: 10th Div “TU MEN GANG” (name of river).
Code Name of Educ Bn “KONSU KANG” (name of river).
(2) Present Strength:
10th Div - 7000 (?)
10th Div Hq - 180 men

c. Chronology:
4 Oct 50 - Conscripted into the NKA North of P’YONGYANG, NORTH KOREA.
20 Nov 50 - Arr HWACH’ON, NORTH KROEA. 10th Div was reorganized.
Dec 50 - (latter part) 10th Div left HWACH’ON, NORTH KOREA. No traveling during the day. Route unknown. While enroute south, 10th Div received approximately 11 air attacks. Air attacks inflicted 19 KIA in 10th Div HQ with numerous wounded. Wounded left behind without medical care.
O/a 15 Jan 51 - Arr vicinity of CHONG SONG (ER 0531). The 27th and 29th Regt separated and headed in different direction. 10th Div Hq, 25th and Arty Regt started SE.
O/a 20 Jan 51 - 10th Div was attacked by UN Force which necessitated withdrawal. After this brief encounter, SE movement was resumed.
O/a 3 Feb 51 - Arr vicinity of HAONG NI (ER 2215).
4 Feb 51 - 10th Div Hq, received air attack in the mountains of HAONG NI (ER 2215). PW was wounded and left behind. Being by himself, PW went into HAONG NI village for shelter and care. Stayed for one day.
6 Feb 51 - UN Force’s airplane dropped surrender leaflet at 1000 hours. PW picked up one good conduct pass; went into SANGONG NI (ER 1910) Police and surrendered.

e. Weapons and Equipment: 10th Div Hq
250 Russian M1891/30 Rifles, 80 rd rifle.
1 hand grenade per man.
2 Russian telephones not operable (no battery).
5 Field telephones.

f. Status and Route of Supply:
Ammo - Only what the troops carried, no resupply.
Food - Food was procured through villages by force. Each man received approx two hands full of rice per day. If large quantity of rice was procured from villages, approx 2 to 3 days ration were given to troops.
Medical - PW heard of no sickness within the 10th Div Hq. Medical supply was scarce. Only had bandages. Approx 30 nurses attached to the 10th Div hq.
Clothing - No resupply of clothing. Most troops wore NK uniform. Rest wore civilian (white) clothes.
Shelter - Taken in villages and mountains.

g. Morale:
NK troops morale was very low due to hard fighting with little or no results, inadequate food, weapons, and equipment.
