FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI - 0256) 7 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE OF CAPTURE, PLACE: 031200 Feb 51, at a point 2.5 Km E of CHINCHON

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative. Information obtained is fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted 14 Aug 50 into “Volunteer Army” at SEOUL and with approx 1,000 men assigned to NKA 3rd Div, 395th Reinforcement Bn 1 Sep 50. Until 11 Oct 50, PW unit headed southward, through KUMCHON, vic KIMCHON-GUN, (vic NAKTONG River) and CHONGJU. PW deserted his unit at SANGJONG-NI (CR7487) where o/a 11 Oct he joined the CHUNGJU Communist Party Guerrilla Unit (2 Co) and was assigned to the 2nd Co (80 men). Received 2 days Communist culture training and was armed with a Russian rifle. 16 Oct 50, while the 2nd Co was heading toward TAESHIN-NI (DR2800) 72 men were ordered assigned to an unknown unit. Remainder of the Co, together with 1st Co (total strength now 75) attacked ROK troops o/a 19 Oct 50 vic TAESHIN-NI. Moved to SONGNI-SAN (CR9944) where it was attacked occasionally by ROK troops. During this period (13 Nov 50 to 13 Jan 51) one of the unit’s political officer was killed and the unit was depleted to approx 30 men. O/a 13 Jan 51, after hearing that the town was liberated by NKA troops, the unit headed for CHUNGJU, learning on the way that it was still held by UN Forces. As a result they headed for CHINCHON (CR6279) and arrived 3 Feb 51 at 0630 hr. At CHINCHON the strength of the unit was approx 27 men including commander. At CHINCHON, the unit went on patrol to locate a route to OTAE-SAN (DS5903). During this patroling the unit was dispersed into the mountains, at which time PW was captured.

b. Organization and Strength (Present):
Strength of the PW unit was approx 27 men at time he became separated from his unit.

c. Status of Arms, Ammunition, Equipment, Etc:
13 Russian rifles (30 rd per rifle), 2 M-1 rifles (40 rd per rifle), 2 carbines (2 magazine per rifle), 2 Russian pistols, and 12 Russian grenades, 1 binocular.

d. Status of Food and Clothing:
Food was looted from villages in the area.

e. Mission and Intentions:
Unit was to assemble at OTAE-SAN, and look for better situation to assist NKA, and to interfere with operations of UN Forces in the rear.

f. Personalities:
SIN Chae Gyong (심재경), 28 yr, Unit Co.
HWANG Sog Gu (황석구), 24 yr, CO 2nd Co.
LEE Ki Yong (이기영), 25 yr, Plat Ldr.

g. Medical:
Most of the men were suffering from cold and frostbite. One of the men had a contagious disease.
