PW appeared to be in good physical condition at the time of interrogation. Cooperative and of average intelligence. He was a farmer prior to entering the service. Information obtained is fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
I NK Corps composed of 8th, 17th, and 47th Div
17th Div composed of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regt Recon Co, Med Unit, and Education Bn.
Recon Co composed of Recon Plat, Attack Plat, Intelligence Plat, and Reserve Plat.

Increase in personnel was obtained in SEOUL o/a 25 Jan 51 from an unknown unit requested by Co CO.
Recon Co had SMG, rifles (100 rd ammo per rifle), and 2 hand grenades per man.
Each Rifle Plat had one LMG and rifles.
Each Inf Bn had a HMG Co with 5 HMG.
b. Unit Assignment and Intention:
6 Jan 51 at SEOUL, heard from his Co CO that the 17th Div assignment was to defend SEOUL.
c. Disposition:
11 Feb 51, Recon Co and 17th Div CP was located at PAENGNYON-DONG (CS170609). 11 Feb 51, 3rd Regt CP was located in the same village. 11 Feb 51, elements of the 1st Regt were located in the hills immediately north and running east and southeast of HAENJU (CS073630). 11 Feb 51, elements of 2nd Regt were located in vic (CS101630) and vic (CS110620). Elements of 3rd Regt were located in SUSAENG-NI (CS151616). 11 Feb 51, PW heard from a friend that the 1st Regt CP was located 1 km west of SUSAENG-NI. 11 Feb 51, heard from another friend that 2nd Regt CP was located in a village of CHUNGSAN-SANG-NI (CS155612). 11 Feb 51, heard from a friend that 47th Div was in the vic of NAMSAN (CS220573). 9 Feb 51, heard from a friend in his Co that the 39th and the 50th CCF Armies were east of SEOUL. 10 Feb 51, heard from a friend in his Co, that the 8th Div was located east of SEOUL and north of the HAN River. No CCF troops observed in the 17th Div sector west northwest of SEOUL.
d. Communication:
Telephones were used by Bn and higher echelons. Heard from a friend that the 17th Div had one telegraph set. Recon Co had one telephone. There were approx 15 trucks and jeeps (Russian) in the entire 17th Div, used to haul food and ammunition. The trucks were were hid in the mountains during daylight.

f. Armor:
O/a 25 Jan 51, observed 5 tanks of the 2nd Regt, 17th Div (tanks had muzzle brakes). O/a 28 Jan 51, PW observed 4 armored cars belonging to 47th Div heading towards SEOUL from a point 2 km west of SEOUL. The armored cars were captured equipment.
g. Artillery:
O/a 8 Feb 51, observed one 122mm howitzer, one 76mm gun, and one 45mm gun which belonged to the 8th Div in vic CS169613. Heard from a friend that 47th Div had a 122mm howitzer and that there were a total of 6 76mm and 45mm guns within the Corps.
h. Morale:
Morale of approx 40% of the men in PW unit was low due to fear of air strikes.
i. Chronology:
Volunteered into the NKA 20 Aug 50 at ANDONG (DR7646). Arrived SINUIJU early Nov 50 by way of MANPOJIN (BA7459) and assigned to present unit. At that time 17th Div was being reconstituted at SINUIJU by bringing in recruits and troops from other units as replacements. 17th Div departed SINUIJU in mid Nov 50 and arrived at SEOUL 5 Jan 51, travelling at night on foot by way of SINANJU (YD2486), PYONGYANG, SARIWON (YC4065). Enroute 17th Div crossed the IMJIN River at KILSUNG-NI 1 Jan 51. PW and another soldier crossed the HAN River at HAENGJU (CS073630) 11 Feb 51 with orders to observe and report where and what the UN forces were doing. PW assignment was to go to KUMPO and the other soldier to INCHON and report back within 4 days. They were dressed as civilians and unarmed. PW reached KUMPO 12 Feb 51 but since no UN Forces were observed, he continued southwestward and approx 2 km southwest of KUMPO, he was stopped and questioned by a ROK soldier who in turn turned him over to an officer.
j. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food and ammo were sufficient. Supplies were hauled by trucks at night from unknown sources.
k. Replacements:
11 Feb 51, heard from an intelligence officer that two NK Div had arrived as reinforcements at a point 40 km north of SEOUL. Heard from friends that an attack will begin when the two Div arrive in SEOUL. Wounded personnel were sent to the rear for medical treatment. Stragglers who were unable to find their units were integrated into adjacent units.
l. Psychological Warfare:
Observed UN leaflets written only in Chinese and did not hear any aerial broadcasts.
m. Road Blocks, Mine Fields, and Bridges:
While on a mission, was shown mines laid on the road north of the HAN River and south of HAENGJU (CS073630) and on the road vic (CS064620).
n. Medical:
Recon Co received one immunization (type unk) at SINAN-NI. Indigestion was the most common ailment.
PW was previously interrogated by the 1st ROK Division.
