2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative, but dates and locations poor.
Reliability: Fair

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
23 Sep 50 - Conscripted at KANGNUNG-GUN DS9178 and assigned to 38th Div, 1st Regt, Mortar Co.
1 Feb 51 - 38th Div deactivated. 1st Regt of 38th Div; strength; 1,200 reassigned to 7th Div at YONGDU-RI (CS8656). PW and 36 men assigned to 3rd Bn of 1st Regt.
4 Feb 51 - 3rd Bn retreated vic ANHUNG-MYON (DS2252) due to advancing ROK.
5 Feb 51 - 8th Co received orders to hold line at unk mountain.
7 Feb 51 - 8th Co retreated to BONGHWA Mt. 7th and 9th Co also assembled here. The 3rd Bn with strength of 400 men dug defensive position on top of BONGHWA Mt, but ROK were already attacking from both flanks.
8 Feb 51 - BONGHWA, captured by ROK. 3rd Bn continued to retreat. PW Bn suffered 100 casualties.
9 Feb 51 - 1100 hr; PW captured.

Strength of 3rd Bn - 300 men
When PW assigned to 7th Div at YONGDU-RI he received a Russ rifle and 100 rd 4 Feb 51. The only resupply 8th Co received was 30 band grenades at PONGHWA Mt.

e. Medical:
PW carried a Med kit but had no brassard.
Medicine carried in kit as follows:
Mercurochrome - 20 gram
Sterilized Plaster - 150
Salve - 50 gram
Sulfurdiazine - 15 grams (powder)
NaHCO3 - 50 grams
On the night of 5th Feb 51, PW received some mercurochrome, DDT and bandages, but since he was going into combat left it behind.
Heard that personnel of 3rd Regt, 7th Div suffered from typhus. 15 men from ea Bn of 1st Regt, 7th Div suffered from influenza. 10% of 1st Regt, 7th Div from frostbite. 1% fungus. Medicines were inadequate. No resupply. Civilian homes were utilized as hospitals.

f. Intention (hearsay from Co CO 1 Feb 51)
7th Div was to delay the UN troops at the HONGCH’ON - WONJU axis while the 6th, 12th and other units regroup and reorganize for an offensive.

g. Morale:
Morale was low, due to constant air strafing and artillery fire.
Observed surrender leaflets between PONGHWA Mt and WONJU o/a 4 Feb 51. Due to Chinese Characters PW disregarded the leaflets. Also heard at SOWON-MYON, SAMNI (near HOENGSONG) a plane broadcast but troops were apathetic. Amazed at tactics (plane broadcast) used by UN troops.

h. Guerrillas:
3 Feb 51 - Observed 19 men and 1 woman, armed with 5 weapons heading toward KANGNUNG (DS9178).
