FIELD REPORT (163 - MISDI - 0286) 13 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS

2. ASSESSMENT:
Tactical information limited. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission:
PW heard a speech given by Asst Div Commander at HWACHON, North KOREA saying that 10th Div mission were to infiltrate into UN line and cut off UN MSR.

b. Strength of Unit:
(1) Original Strength: 1st Dec 50 at HWACHON, North KOREA.
10th Div - 10,000 (?)
Medical Bn - 58 as follows: 36 - Nurse’s Aids
2- Nurses
20 - Aid man
(2) Present Strength:
Medical Bn - 57
Code name of Medical Bn was “I TAI”.

c. Military History:
1 Dec 50 - Conscripted at HWACHON, North KOREA with 5 others (female) from her village. PW worked in the kitchen at Hq 10th Div until 4 Dec 50 and then assigned to Medical Bn as Nurse’s Aid.
24 Dec 50 - 10th Div left HWACHON, North KOREA. Between HWACHON, North KOREA and ANDONG, 10th Div received air attacks and suffered approximately 90 wounded. Badly wounded were left in nearby villages.
O/a 15 Jan 51 - Div arrived near ANDONG (East of ANDONG). PW unit travelled back and forth around ANDONG Area for about 7 days. Then travelled 4 days SE from ANDONG Area. (Approximately 12 Km per day.) Took 3 days rest at an unknown location. 25th Regt was also resting here.
Medical Bn did not have any tents or other shelters for wounded. Wounded were given first aid treatment and serious cases were left behind practically unattended.
6 Feb 51 - Because of flu PW was also left behind by her unit and stayed at HUGI. 10th Div Hq was located 2 Km West of HUGI.
8 Feb 51 - PW brought UN safe conduct pass with her and surrendered.

d. Weapons and Equipment: 10th Div Hq had
2 HMG
4 LMG
4 PPS SMG
20 PPSh SMG

e. Status and Route of Supply:
Ammo - No resupply.
Food - Procured from villages.
Medical - Three syrings and needles.
About 150 bottles of powdered penicillins. (USA)
Few scissors and rolled bandages.
Diszene 1000 tablets (approximately).
Diazole 1400 tablets (approximately).
Aspirin, Powdered 1 lb.
Alcohol, Wood 5 pints.
Clothing - No resupply.
Shelter - Villager’s house if available.

f. Foreign Element: Middle of Jan 51, PW heard that CCF troops were in TAEJON, and also heard that CCF were about 40 Km rear of 10th Div.

g. Morale: Majority of the troops had low morale.

h. UN PW:
PW observed on American, three ROK PW o/a 28 Jan 51 (location unknown). They were marching with 10th Div Hq. Four UN PW were not wounded and were wearing Parka. PW heard that an order came from higher headquarters of NKA, prohibiting confiscation of PW clothing.

i. Background:
PW had 5 years of primary schooling, was member of Yong Women’s Association. Age: 18. Nurse’s Aids were all conscripted around December 1950.
