PW very cooperative but had only a faint knowledge of place names. Not very intelligent, but information seems fairly reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.
Deserted 4 Feb 51 in vic of HOENGSONG and surrendered to UN Forces. PW was a SK and was inducted into the NKA by force.
a. TO & E:
O/a 28 Jan 51, heard from friend that the 7th Div CP was located approx 12 km N of HOENGSONG. At the time of desertion, 7th Div had defensive positions approx 6 km E of HOENGSONG and the men were resting and awaiting new orders.
2nd Bn had about 250 men and he believes that 1st Regt was about 800 strong. Weapons in 2nd Bn: 3 x 82mm mortars (70 rd total), 3 HMG (ammo unk), 1 LMG per plat (4 magazines ea), 4 PPSH SMG per plat (ammo 200 rd ea), 3 rifles per plat (200 rd ea). All others were armed with Russian rifles (300 rd ea) and carbines (200 rd ea). Each man carried 2 hand grenades. Observed 1 anti-tank rifle in one of the plat. Believes that the other two Bn in 1st Regt had the same type and amount of weapons and ammo.
O/a 2 Feb 51 heard that dynamite was to be transported from the Regt to his Bn (2nd) for use against UN tanks. The men in the unit received 1 day training on how to throw a dynamite stick at a tank. Each plat had a tank destroying team consisting of 3 men armed with dynamite and hand grenades.
b. Unit Location:
1st Regt CP was located approx 5 km ENE of HOENGSONG at the time he deserted. CP was in a small village (about 15 houses).
2nd Bn of the 1st Regt was located approx 6 km E of HOENGSONG and approx 2 km SE of the Regt CP.
PW was formerly assigned to the NKA 38th Div, 1st Regt, 3rd Bn until the Div was deactivated o/a 18 Jan 51 at a locality 20 km NW of HOENGSONG. 1st Regt was assigned to the 7th Div and the 2nd Regt went to the 12th Div.
c. CCF:
O/a 7 Jan 51 saw a company of NK troops travelling W from HOENGSONG and heard from his Plat Ldr that they were part of the 12th Div and were going to SEOUL.
Heard that the NKA would be supported by many planes when they go on the offensive.
d. Clothing: Every one in the 7th Div wore winter clothing.
e. Medical (Diseases): Neither saw nor heard of any contagious disease.
f. Food: Unit received no food supply but food found in villages seemed sufficient.
g. Morale: Morale high for they believed the Communist propaganda passed to them.
