FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI - 0279) 13 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was a member of South Korean Communist Party. Due to his very poor educational background the information concerning the Communist Party is not considered reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW joined the South Korean Communist Party 15 Sep 47 at CHONGJU. 23 Sep 50, PW joined an NKA unit withdrawing N, and o/a 3 Nov 50 arrived at a village, approx 16 km N of SORAK-SAN (DT5418). O/a 13 Nov 50 he was assigned to present unit by introduction from LEE Dal Jin who was assistant chief of organization in the Central Hq of the SK Communist Party. 14 Nov 50 the unit (CHRI-SAN Guerrilla Unit) about 1,500 men, departed SORAK-SAN and arrived NOKCHON-NI (DS7210) o/a 26 Dec 50 via ODAE-SAN and ambushed the SK Security Police Force. Captured 30 SK Youth Party members. The unit headed S and o/a 1 Jan 51 attacked YONGCHUN (DS5404) Police Station. Captured about 40 SK Youth Party members and some ammo. Arrived AWORAK-SAN (DR2181) o/a 25 Jan 50 after about 25 days’ travel. Guerrilla Unit engaged UN Forces on two occasions, the latter time by small arms fire o/a 1 Feb 51 at YUSANG-NI (DR1073). O/a 2 Feb 51, being forced to withdraw, after the last engagement, arrived at vic HAGWANPYONG-NI. Remained until 5 Feb 51. PW unit engaged the enemy (ROK) during the day and was forced to withdraw during the night. He became sick and was sleeping in a house at HAGWANGPYONG-NI until he was captured.

b. Organization and Strength:
Korean South Army CHIRI-SAN Guerrilla Unit strength was approx 1,500 and was organized at HUYPYONG. Unit had 50 men in General Hq (總司令部), 40 men in General Staff Section (總參謀部), 40 in Military Hq (軍事司令部), 40 in Political hq (政治司令部), 70 in Peoples’ Brigade (人民旅団), 100 in SO Unit (■部隊), 100 in SO Branch Unit (■支隊), 100 in KO MYON SOK Unit (■玄鍚部隊), 70 in KIM Hung Bok (金興部隊) (Code No. 505), 100 in KWAN Il Unit (觀一部隊) and other units.
Unit strength as of 5 Feb 51 was approx 1,000 men. Most casualties were incurred by small arms fire in the mountain actions, however, PW did not know the breakdown of the casualties. Some were left behind because of illness.

c. Deployment of PW Unit:
Guerrilla unit was located in the area of HAGWANGPYONG-NI. He heard from KIM Hung Bok that their object was to head for CHIRI-SAN via POUN, MUJU, and KOCHANG. He believes that the guerrilla unit headed toward CHIRI-SAN.

d. Deployment of Other Units:
O/a 15 Jan 51, at night, PW observed a large unit heading southward at SOLLIM (DR2983). He heard from a soldier that they were the NKA 10th Div. He further heard from KIM Hung Bok that they had about 1,000 men and were heading for TAEGU via ANDONG.

e. Status of Arms and Ammunition:

There was no supply of ammo or weapons from the rear. Troops had to take good care of their weapons. The only way of getting additional ammo and weapons was by capture.

f. Status of Food and Clothing:
Food and clothing were confiscated from villages. Troops were fed twice daily, but at times they were not fed for a day.

g. Mission and Intentions:
PW heard from his unit CO that their general mission was to head for CHIRI-SAN, to locate their operational area and collect food for themselves. Then they were to cut the enemy supply line, ie: destroy railroads, bridges, and other enemy facilities.

i. Physical Condition:
As of 5 Feb 51, about 100 of the troops suffered from unknown contagious diseases (symptoms: headaches, chills). About 30 suffered from frostbite.

j. Propaganda:
Troops were assured of victory by the political officer because of support by RUSSIA and Communist CHINA.
