FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1540) 16 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: LEE, Taek Yong (利澤永) (이택영) (NKA)
RANK: Sr Sgt (副小隊長)
ORGN: I Corps, 47th Div, Engr Bn (Code Name: TAEDONG GANG), Rear Service Plat.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and spoke freely. PW claims he does not have much information to offer because he was with the rear service unit and was not interested in fighting.
Info seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into the NKA 2 Nov 50 and SINUIJU (XE1839) and was assigned to the 47th Div, Engr Bn located in SINUIJU.
2 Nov 50, Engr Bn, 47th Div departed SINUIJU and marched through KUSONG (XE9228), SINUNJU (YD2486), PYONGYANG (XD3722), and SARIWON (YC4065), and entered SEOUL during early Jan 51.
9 Jan 51, Engr Bn, 47th Div departed SEOUL and marched to KYESU-RI (CS061469).
6 Feb 51, Engr Bn, 47th Div departed KYESU-RI and arrived at YONGDUNGPO (CS1553).
7 Feb 51, PW and his officer deserted their unit and surrendered to US 24th RCT 9 Feb 51 at KYESURI.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
6 Feb 51, Engr Bn, 47th Div departed KYESU-RI (CS061469) and arrived at YONGDUNGPO (CS1553) same day.
6 Feb 51, the 47th Div Hq was located to the west of KYESU-RI.
PW believes that the entire 47th Div fled northward 6 Feb 51.

 NOTE: This unit did not carry any land mines, but land mines which were picked up were used by this unit.
Personnel losses were caused by desertions.

d. Food, Ammo, and Other Supplies:
After entering S KOREA the Engr Bn, 47th Regt received its food from INCH’ON (BS9050). Rice were stored in air raid shelters located at various places within INCH’ON. Usually 6 days food rations were obtained at one time. Food was hauled on oxcarts from INCH’ON to the unit area at night utilizing the closest route possible. Troops were fed 900 grams of staple food a day, whenever possible.

e. Signal:
No signal equipment was observed with the Engr Bn, 47th Div. All communications by runners.

f. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale of the troops of Engr Bn, 47th Div was very low because all troops of the Engr Bn were men that tried to evade conscription and were thrown into labor gangs for trying to evade the draft. Majority of the men were over 30 years old and did not care to fight. Most of the troops did not know how to fire their weapons properly and did not clean their piece for months until tey were ordered to do so.

g. Medical:
No communicable diseases was noted in the Engr bn, 47th Div.
Most of the troops of the Engr Bn was complaining about frost bitten feet. Mercurichrome and iodine were applied for treatment.

h. Psychological Warfare:
PW voluntarily surrendered because he did not want to fight against his brothers who lived in South KOREA.
PW observed a leaflet south of SEOUL. “If you surrender we will treat you fairly, giving you medical treatment and adequate food”.
PW was planning to surrender and the leaflet did not make the PW change his mind.
