FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI-0195) 14 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but illiterate. PW had no sense of direction nor memory of dates. PW being a KP, military information was limited. PW was a farmer prior to entering service. Was also a KP in the CNA.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
112th Div crossed the YALU River Oct 50. O/a 2 Feb 334th Regt crossed the HAN River and proceeded South. O/a 6 Feb 51 arrived at unk mountain and at this location 9th Co was engaged in combat against UN Forces for 2 days. During this engagement 30 men of 3rd Plat (9th Co) was almost annihilated by UN arty bombardment. 6 men from 3rd Plat survived. They were later assigned to the 1st and 2nd Plat. O/a 8 Feb 51 9th Co withdrew N to unk mountain. O/a 10 Feb 51 arrived unk mountain approx 4km N of Hill 473 and bivouacked for 2 days. On night of 12 Feb 51 9th Co arrived on Hill 473 CS 573489 and relieved the 7th or 8th Co who had been defending the hill. 13 Feb 51 while 9th Co was engaged in combat PW deserted his unit and voluntarily surrendered. At time of surrender PW was utilized as ammo bearer.

d. Intentions: Defend Hill 473 at all cost.

e. Location of Unit: Regt CP located approx. 3 km N of Hill 473. 3rd Bn CP located approx. 1 km N of Hill 473.

f. Replacements: O/a 1 Feb 51 one man was sent from each Co (7th, 8th and 9th Co to get replacements.

g. Morale: Morale among troops generally low. One man from PW squad committed suicide.

h. Leaflets & Broadcast: Heard no loudspeaker broadcast. Picked up surrender leaflet but unable to read. Heard comrade read it and decided to desert.

i. Supply: O/a 10 Feb PW received new pair of rubberized boots which was obtained from supply point located at Regt CP.
