FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0402) 7 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but information was limited. Reliability fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
21 Apr 49 - Conscripted at SARIWON and assigned to 3rd Brig, 6th Bn, 3rd Co, 3rd Plat, 2nd Sqd.
26 Apr 49 - 3rd Brig departed SARIWON on rail for NAMCHON, and arrived that night. Only 5th Bn stayed at NAMCHON for training (6 mo), rest sent to the 38th parallel for guard duty.
May 50 - 6th Bn left NAMCHON by rail for CHUKCHON where 3rd Brig Hq was located.
15 May 50 - 6th Bn arrived CHUKCH’ON. At that time 3rd Brig Hq was located 2km away.
23 Jun 50 - 3rd Brig departed CUKCH’ON area, heading south.
26 Jun 50 - 1st, 2nd and 5th Bn took route to ONJIN (only PW was transferred from 6th to 2nd Bn) while 3rd, 4th and 6th Bn headed toward YONAN
27 Jun 50 - 1st, 2nd and 5th Bn arrived ONJIN (whereabouts of 3rd, 4th and 6th unk).
30 Jun 50 - 1st, 2nd and 5th departed ONJIN on foot heading south. At CHUYA RR station only 2nd Bn rode freight cars for KAESONG. (Whereabouts of 1st and 5th Bn unk)
3 Jul 50 - 2nd Bn arrived KAESONG.
8 Jul 50 - 2nd Bn departed KAESONG for MUNSAN. Travelled on trucks arrived same day. 3rd Brig was assembled here and said Brig redesignated 9th div; strength of 5,000.
9 Jul 50 - 9th Div departed MUNSON for SEOUL on foot.
11 Jul 50 - 9th Div arrived SEOUL and Div engaged on guard duty.
11 Aug 50 - 9th Div departed SEOUL on foot for the NAKTONG River.
11 Sep 50 - 9th Div arrived the NAKTONG River. Committed into action at place called YONGSAN. (Casualties - 50 %)
28 Sep 50 - Rest of Div retreated N due to UN offense.
15 Oct 50 - 2,500 men assembled at KARYOJU (CT 2690).
25 Oct 50 - 2,500 men departed KARYOJU for CHORWON. 9th Div engaged in guerrilla warfare within the CHORWON - SEOUL axis. (Till late Nov 50 behind the UN line).
Late Nov 50 - Above mentioned 2,500 headed toward vic of WONJU. After observing UN Forces, only 1st Regt headed toward ANHUNG MYON (Whereabouts of 2nd and 3rd Regt unk).
2 Feb 51 - 1st Regt arrived ANHUNG MYON. PW deserted.
4 Feb 51 - Captured.

b. Organization & Strength:
II Corps composed of 2nd, 9th, 10th, 27th and 31st Div. 9th Div was composed of 3 Regt.
1st Regt: Com Plat, Med Co, Engr Plat, Guard Plat, and Supply Plat.
Com Plat composed of the followings:
3 Sqd (8 men each - as of 2 Feb). Total of 24 EM and one officer. Each Sqd had 1 PPSH SMG, 7 Russ carbines with 60-70 ammo, 2 hand grenades and Sqd Ldr had Russ carbine with 100 rd.

c. Equipment:
PW observed the following equipment at Bn level.
3 x 82mm mortars with 10 shells each (Russian)
5 HMG with 250 rd each (Russian)
1 LMG per Sqd with 150 rd (US)
2 AT (Russian)
Communication between Regt and Div was by Russ radio to which a telephone was attached. The Div CP was located approx. 16km N of PYONGCHANG (DS 4535) - as of 2 Feb -

1st Regt: “KUMGANSAN”
Com Plat: “PONGGE” (lighting)

e. Personalities:

All wore cotton quilted uniform, boots or rubber shoes.

Morale was low due to exhausting march and no resupply of ammo.
