9 Feb 51 PW deserted his unit and surrendered with a “Good Conduct” pass to elements of 1st Bn, 19th RCT 121300 Feb 51. PW was in good physical condition at time of interrogation. Was very cooperative but of below average intelligence. PW was unable to reveal pertinent military information due to short period spent with present unit. Information obtained should be assessed accordingly. PW was engaged in farming prior to entering service. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into the CCF in Jul 50. Received 1 month training as aid man. No basic training received.
27 Jan 51 Medical Co crossed the YALU River and proceeded S. Crossed the 38th parallel 1 Feb 51. After 2 days march Medical Co arrived at a replacement center (location unk). Here the Medical Co was divided into 3 Plat. Each Plat was sent out to various unit (distribution unk). After 3 more days march the 1st Plat arrived at mountain (location unk), presumably a Regt CP. Here the 1st Plat was broken down to squads and sent out. O/a 8 Feb 51, 1st Sqd (1 officer & 12 EM) crossed the HAN River and after a day’s march arrived at mountain (location unk), presumably a Bn CP. Here the 1st Sqd was divided into 3 teams (4 men per team). PW team proceeded S and after 2 days march arrived at aid station (unit & location unk). PW team was sent out to the front line to haul wounded. Enroute PW deserted and proceeded generally S. PW was picked up by elements of 1st Bn, 19th Regt on 121300 Feb 51.

Casualties were caused by sickness while enroute to S KOREA. Received few casualties from air strike. Only 3 Jap type rifles in Med Co
c. Replacements:
While PW was in CHINA he heard rumors that replacements will be sent to KOREA.
d. Leaflets & Broadcast:
PW heard no broadcast. PW picked up surrender leaflet after crossing HAN River. Although unable to read all Chinese characters on leaflet, got general idea from simple words and by looking at picture. PW sincerely believed in the surrender leaflet. No knowledge of opinion of other troops.
e. Morale:
General morale of troops was low. PW personally observed few men break down and cry. Also heard of troops committing suicide.
