2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and spoke freely. Information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into CCF 7 Sep 49 and was assigned to the South Central Army College (中南軍使大学), HUNAN Branch School (湖南分校). 6 Jun 50, PW graduated and was sent to 4th Field Army, Political Section, Training Unit located at HANKOW (漢口) where he received training until Aug 50.
During Sep 50, PW was sent to 50th Army, 167th Div, 501st Regt located in HUPEI(湖北) to organize a Youth Association.
During Oct 50, PW was assigned to 50th Army, 150th Div, 450th Regt, located at HAILUN (海倫) as Food Supply Officer.
24 Oct 50, 150th Div departed HAILUN and travelled by train to ANTUNG (安東).
27 Oct 50, 450th Regt crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG into SINUIJU. 450th Regt marched southward through CH’OLSAN, PAKCHON, SINANJU, P’YONGYANG, SARIWON, KAESONG, SEOUL to SUWON to KUMYANGJANG (CS4122), arriving 20 Jan 51.
29 Jan 51, 450th Regt was attacked by a UN Force at KUMYANGJANG and retreated northward to TAEDANG-NI (phonetic).
PW deserted from his unit 5 Feb 51 and TAEDANG-NI and surrendered at MONG-NI (CS430384) 8 Feb 51.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
5 Feb 51, the 50th Army was located to the South of SEOUL and was defending the area as the 38th, 39th, and elements of the 50th Armies were resting in the SEOUL area.
42nd Army was located in the INCHON area guarding against UN amphibious landings.
The 38th and 39th Armies were combat units equipped with howitzers with a range up to 12 km.
During early Dec 50, PW heard that the 10th Army of the 1st Field Army and the HWAPEI Artillery Div (華北砲兵師), 60th, 62nd, and 66th Armies, directly attached to the Chinese Communist Army, were in KOREA.

c. T/O & E and Strength:
4th Field Army: 15 Armies (38th to 50th, others unknown)
7 Army: 38th, 39th, 40th, 42nd and 50th Armies, others unknown of the 4th Field Army were in KOREA. These units were under the command of the Chinese Volunteer Army in KOREA.
50th Army: 158th, 149th, and 150th Div, Artillery Regt and Security Regt.
150th Div: 448th, 449th, and 450th Rifle Regiments, Mountain Gun Bn and Security Bn.
450th Regt: 3 Rifle Battalions, 82mm Mortar Co, 82mm Inf Gun Co, Signal Co, Security Co and Medical unit.

38th Army: 51 PU (五一部) - PINGSAN PU (平山部)
39th Army: 52 PU (五二部) - NANHAI PU (南海部)
40th Army: 53 PU (五三部)
42nd Army: 54 or 55 PU
50th Army: 57 PU (五七部) - LIANGSHAN (梁山部)
Both codes were used after arriving in KOREA. The 51 PU was called “five-one” PU, not “fifty one” PU. Others were called similarly.

 Note: 30 Jan 51, the 450th Regt suffered approximately 300 casualties during an engagement at KUMYANGJANG-NI.
150th Div:
 a. Personnel: Approx 10,000
 z b. Equipment & ammo:
   Details on equipment unknown
Personnel losses were caused chiefly by UN artillery fire.

d. Personalities:
TSENG, Tae Sheng (曾澤生), Army CG, 50th Army.
PENG, Te Huai (彭德懷), CinC, Chinese Volunteer Army in KOREA.
LIU, Feng Cho (劉鳳卓), C/S, 450th Regt.

e. Replacements:
The 2nd Line Troops Unit (第二線軍團) was to arrive as replacements for the units on the front.

f. Supplies:
Food was procured locally by issuing procurement slips in exchange for food. Usually 2 days food rations were obtained.
Rubber sole padded shoes were issued to the troops of the 450th Regt 4 Feb 51. The shoes were believed to have been made in MANCHURIA and transported to the front.
4 Feb 51, PW observed 9 horse carts loaded with ammo (small arms) and shoes being transported south from SEOUL.

g. Armor, Artillery, and Aircraft:
PW observed 4 tanks (similar to T-34) of the NKA moving southward from P’YONGYANG during Dec 50.
During Dec 50, PW observed over 20x122mm howitzers, each drawn by trucks, heading southward toward P’YONGYANG.

h. Signal:
Telephones were used for communications between battalion and regiment. Lower units used runners.

i. Morale:
Morale of the majority of the 50th Army troops was low because the troops were tired of being committed to the line against superior forces. PW believes the morale would improve if the unit were given rest like other units.

j. UN PW:
PW heard that approximately 300 UN troops captured by CCF units near SINANJU during December 50 will be sent to CHINA. Many PW were suffering from stomach disorders because they were fed Chinese food.

k. Medical:
No communicable disease or frozen feet were noticed with the 450th Regt.

l. Psychological Warfare:
PW voluntarily surrendered because he could not bear life under communism.
PW saw UN leaflets.
PW picked up a Safe Conduct Pass addressed to the Chinese at PAKCHON.
PW sought to surrender largely because of it.
