PW was cooperative and spoke freely.

a. Chronology:
PW was inducted into the CNA at HONAN SHENG (湖南省) during Jan 1941 and was assigned to the CNA 40th Army, 39th Div.
During 1942, the 39th Div arrived at HOPEI (湖北省) where the unit engaged Japanese Forces. After the 39th Div was defeated during engagements with the Japanese, PW fled to SHANHSI SHENG (山西省) where he joined the CNA 33rd Army during April 1945.
PW was captured by CCF 66th Army at SHANHSI SHENG 29 April 49.
During Aug 49, PW was assigned to the 66th Army, 198th Div, 594th Regt located at TATUNG (大同), SHANHSI SHENG.
During Nov 49, the 66th Army departed SHANHSI SHENG and arrived at TIENCHING (天津).
13 Oct 50, the 594th Regt departed TIENCHING and traveled by train to ANTUNG (安東).
17 Oct 50, the 594th Regt crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG into SINUIJU (XE 1839).
19 Oct 50, the 594th Regt arrived at KUSONG (XE 9328)
During Nov 50, the 594th Regt departed KUSONG and marched through TAECHON (YE 1422), YONGSAN DONG (YE 3012), and arrived at HWACHON (CT8718).
After the withdrawal of UN Units from the 38th Parallel area, the 594th Regt departed HWACH’ON and, travelled through CHUNCHON (CS 8893) to HONGCHON (DS 0272), but the 594th Regt withdrew to HWACH’ON when UN Units counter-attacked 13 Jan 51.
3 Feb 51, the 594th Regt departed HWACH’ON area and marched through CHUNCHON and HONGCHON (6 Feb 51) to a village approx 10 km South of HONGCHON, arriving 8 Feb 51. The 1st Bn, 594th Regt was to set up defensive positions on a hill approx 16 km south of HONGCHON.
While enroute to the hill 8 Feb 51, PW and two others deserted and surrendered 091600 I Feb 51 approx 16 km South of HONGCHON.
b. Location and Activities of Unit:
On 7 Feb 51, the 594th Regt position, located approx 16 km South of HONGCHON, was attacked by UN Units. The 594th Regt CP was located in a village 10 km South of HONGCHON.
The 593rd Regt was located on the East flank of the 594th Regt on 7 Feb 51.
NKA Units were located on the West flank of the 594th Regt on 7 Feb 51.
The units were on the defensive on 8 Feb 51.

Details on higher echelon were not known.
Personnel losses were caused chiefly by air strikes.
Exposure to the severe cold also caused a great number of personnel losses.
Details of losses after the first ground combat of the 594th Regt which started on 7 Feb 51, were unk.

e. Replacements:
Two officers from each company of the 66th Army departed for CHINA during early Jan 51 to bring back replacements for the 66th Army.
f. Supplies:
Food was procured locally from each village that the unit occupied. The Ass’t Company Commander of each unit made arrangements for obtaining food.
The 594th Regt was never resupplied with ammo since entering KOREA.
g. Signal:
Telephone communication was used only at battalion and higher echelons. Lower units used messengers.
Bugles were used for reveille and assembly. Use of bugles during combat operations was not known to the PW.
h. Morale:
Morale of the 594th Regt troops was very low due to the lack of sleep and proper clothing.
UN air and artillery were most feared.
f. Medical:
No communicable disease were noted with the 594th Regt.
Approx 10 men per company were suffering from severe frozen feet. A majority of the troops were suffering from mild frost bitten feet.
Frozen feet cases were evacuated for treatment.
j. Psychological Warfare:
PW and two others deserted their unit and surrendered voluntarily because he read in a UN leaflet that PW were given good treatment and received fair amounts of food per day.
The leaflets prompted the PW to surrender.
PW and two others discussed it and surrendered together.
