b. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES:
PW read in pamphlets that there was a CCF 5th Field Army which existed only on paper.
The Co Political Officer said that most of the 4th Field Army personnel were in KOREA: however, elements of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Field Armies personnel were also in KROEA.
The 1st Field Army was in MANCHRIA.
2nd Field Army was in YUNNAN(雲南).
3rd Field Army was in SHANGHAI (上海)
4th Field Army Hq was in HONAN HUPEI (湖南湖北)
On 7 Feb 51, while his 2nd Mortar Plat was in support of the 3rd Bn, PW saw his Plat and the 3rd Bn withdrawing to the NW from the point of cao capture. Reason unk. PW did not retreat but remained and voluntarily surrendered.
In Oct 50, at SINUIJU (XE 1839) PW heard from the Company political officer that the 4th Field Army will attack West and elements of the 1st Field Army will attack East on the Korean peninsula.
On 5 Feb 51 PW heard from the Plat Ldr that they will withdraw 6 km N from the point of capture. There, they will hold the position until the Mechanized Army Group comes from CHINA. However, since he never heard of such a unit while in CHINA, PW believed it all to be propaganda.

c. SIGNAL:
Battalion and above: telephones
Company and Battalion: runners
While resting in mountains, a look-out would blow a whistle: one long blast with two short ones, indicating the approach of aircraft. One long blast was the all-clear signal.
When the plat ldr raised two white flags and brought it down; it meant, “open ranks and advance in two columns”, when he waved the flags from left to right and right to left, it meant,”assemble and march in closed 2 columns”.

d. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Moral was low because they lacked weapons, tanks and airplanes.

e. Medical:
No epidemic disease was noted in PW unit.
No immunization or other counter-measures for epidemic disease have been given to troops.
There were two or three cases of frost bitten feet in PW plat. No treatment was given to them. These soldiers were forced to follow the plat.

f. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
PW voluntarily surrendered to the UN Forces because he did not believe in communism.
PW saw UN leaflets in a mountain, Feb 51.
The leaflet stated: “Don’t you remember that you were fighting with the Japanese for 8 years and during that time the US was your friend? Don’t you want to live instead of fighting this useless war? Surrender yourself and we will give you warm food and clothing”
PW believed what the leaflet stated.
PW believed that the ordinary soldiers believed in the leaflets, although they did not express their sentiments.
