FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS MISD-0241) 2 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative during interrogation and information seems fairly reliable. PW could not read or write and had a very poor memory as to Korean names places and locations. Net recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Mar 1948, PW volunteered into the CNA at SSUPING(四平), MANCHURIA. 10 Nov 48, PW was sent to HAINAN Island, where he served with the CNA 88th Division for a year and a half.
April 50, PW and 92 others were captured by the CCF and were indoctrinated for approx 4 months in a Replacement Regiment of the CCF 4th Field Army.
20 Oct 50, 1st and 2nd Bn, 335th Regt, 112th Div, 38th Army, crossed into KOREA from TUMHWA (通化), MANCHURIA by rail. He heard then from his Co CO that 112th Div was to enter KOREA from TUMHWA and that the 113th and 114th Div were to enter from a different route.
In Nov 50, the 334th and 335th Regt, engaged the enemy for the first time in a three day battle at HUICH’ON. In the battle that ensued later at TOKCH’ON where the 335 Regt had gone from HUICH’ON, the 112th Div was held in reserve while the 113th and 114th were committed to action. Dec 50, PW said, his 335th Regt arrived at an unknown point in the vicinity of 38th parallel. No action was seen here by the Regt.
15 Jan 51, 335th Regt crossed the HAN River, and 28 Jan 51, 2 km N of Hill 592, they bivcuacked. 28 Jan 51, PW 3rd Co of 93 men arrived at Hill #592 and prepared defense positions.
O/a 291400 Jan 51 PW said their position was hit by air and artillery fire. 5 men were KIA and 6 men were WIA. Most of these were caused by artillery fire.
On 301200 Jan 51, their position was again hit by air and artillery fire. He saw two Napalm bombs hit their position. PW said, when he came out he was dazed and wandered about for nearly an hour. He surrendered when he came across a UN soldier.

b. Organization and Strength (Present):
PW said the 38th Army composed of 112th, 113th and 114th Div. Present strength of the 112th Div is approx 6,000 men.
112th Div is composed of the 334th, 335th and the 336th Regt.
335th Regt present strength approx 1,500 men and composed of 3 Bn, 1st Bn had approx 470 men, and was composed of 3 Co of 93 men each and a Hvy Wpn Co of 130 men. There were 3 Plat of approx 30 men in each company.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
28 Jan 51, the 335 Regt Hq was located at a location approx 8 km N of Hill #592 (CS479285), in a small village 100 m E of the highway.
1st Bn CP was 1½ km E of a main road and approx 4 km N from the PW position on hill #592. PW went to the Bn CP once to pick up food and shoes with six men.
3rd Co CP was located on a Hill, 400 m N of Hill #592. 3rd Plat was on the SW slope of the Hill. The 1st and 2nd Plat were located in the vicinity of the 3rd Co CP. These plat were deployed about 400 m away from this CP.

d. Status of Arms, Ammunition, Supply & Equipment:
3rd Co had 7 US LMG with 1000 rd. There were 2 x 60 mm Mortars with 30 shells, 50 model 38 and M-1 rifles and some US SMG M-3. Most of the rifles were M-1 and Carbines with about 100 rd each. There were 8 pistols with 200 rd each and about 4 grenades to each man.
In the Hvy Wpn Co, there were 3 x 82 mm Mortars with 50 rd each, 6 HMG Jap & US Models) with 2,000 rd each and 7 pistols with 200 rd each.
There is, according to PW, a bazooka team, attached directly to each Regt, which is committed to action only when necessary.

e. Disposition of Other Units:
PW heard that the 334th and 336th Regt were resting in the rear at an undisclosed location. O/a 28 Jan 51, he heard from his Plat Ldr that units of the 50th Army were situated about 30 km W of the 38th Army.

f. Status of Food and Clothing:
At HUICH’ON, they received new clothing, some rifle ammo and food. No new issues or replacements were received thereafter.

g. Mission and Intention:
They were told to hold their positions at all cost until spring when an offensive was to begin (date unk).

h. Personalities:

CHANG Lien Sung (張連㫒), 33, 335 Regt CO.
CHOW (FNU) (趙), 28, 1st Bn Comdr.
CHANG Chi Sum (張■順), 35, 3rd Co CO.

i. Medical:
10 men of his 3rd Co of 93 men were suffering from cold and frostbite. The frostbite cases were mild. Officers stresses strongly the prevention of illness and were told not to drink cold water of eat cold food.

j. River Crossing:
They utilized rice straw sacks, during their crossing of the HAN River to prevent them from slipping on the ice. They were to remain in their foxholes as much as possible during the day and to venture out of the holes only on orders, to keep a watchful eye on enemy patrol movements.

k. Camouflage:
During movement from foxholes, while snow is on the ground, they camouflaged with white cloth. Otherwise, they would weave straw hats and stick branches on the hat in the event of air attack, they would squat so that they would appear to be bushed or trees.

l. Leaflets and Morale:
PW said many of the men are afraid to look at leaflets for fear of being caught by their superiors. Morale of the men is low, for they have to stay in holes daily to get away from air attack and artillery fire.
