FIELD REPORT (163- MISDI - 0266) 8 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: PAEK Tong Gun (白東根)
PW NO: 1st M-P-4534
RANK: Pvt
DUTY: Signal Wireless Operator
UNIT: Signal Plat, 1st Co, 1st Bn, Arty Regt, 10th Div.
PLACE OF CAPTURE: TAERYONG-DONG (vicinity)
DATE OF CAPTURE: 6 Feb 51
CAPTURING UNIT: 3rd Bn, 7th Marines.
INTERROGATOR: OKAMURA

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW left behind by his unit 3 Feb 51 because of his bad leg (frost bite). PW hid in the mountain until 6 Feb 51 and surrendered to ROK National Police. PW cooperative, but information limited. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission.
PW heard that unit’s mission was to put up road blocks and out UN NSR.

b. Strength of Unit.

c. Chronology
22 Apr 50 - PW entered NKA (Arty Regt, 10th Div) at SINUIJU.
7 Nov 50 - Arty Regt of 10th Div was reorganized at P’YONGYANG, North KOREA.
7 Dec 50 - Arty Regt left PYONG YANG for HWACHON, North KOREA via YANGGU, North KOREA.
26 Dec 50 - 10th Div (Arty Regt, 25th, 27th and 29th Regt) left for South. Arty Regt of 10th Div passed through HONGCHON, MYONG WOL, ANDONG, CHEONGSONG, and YONGDOK.
O/a 20 Jan 51 - Arty Regt arrived YONG IL. Receiving heavy air strikes. Arty Regt moved frequently each day and retreated to northwest.
3 Feb 51 - PW was left behind by his unit because of his frozen feet.
6 Feb 51 - PW surrendered himself to ROK National Police and later was turned over to 7th Marine.
APO No for Arty Regt was 753 “KUBUNTAI” (meaning 9th Squad). Code Name for 1st Bn of Arty Regt was “TAERYONG GANG”. (Name of river).

d. Personalities:

Plat Ldr - KIM Chea Sun, Jr Lt

e. Weapons and Equipment: Arty Regt had:
2 HMG (Japanese).
3 LMG.
Approx 60 PPSh SMG with about 100 rd per SMG.
300 Hand-grenades.
Rest armed with Russian rifles with 50 rd ammo per rifle.
No Arty pieces.
One field telephone to each Bn with wire (4 km). Arty Regt had one radio and one wireless transmitter. Bn had no transmitter.

f. Status of Supply and Route of Supply:
Ammo - Did not receive any since Unit left North KOREA.
Food - Procured from near-by villages.
Medical - Limited amount of iodine and mercurochrome. One corpsman to each Bn. Few troops from his unit suffering from typhus fever. No medical treatment or preventive medicines for typhus. Seriously wounded were left behind unattended. Slightly wounded followed unit on their own.
Shelter - Mainly in mountain ravines.

g. Other Units:
O/a 28 Dec 50, PW heard that the 2nd Div and the 4th Div (NKA) left for S (destination unknown). Also heard that they were wearing the same uniform as CCF.

h. Morale: Low because of long forced marches without sufficient food or clothing.

i. Effective Weapon:
UN air strikes, especially strafing.

4. GENERAL:
Majority of the officers in his unit were educated in MANCHURIA. Although PW was given a title of wireless operator in a signal Co, his unit had no equipment. PW never worked as a wireless operator in his unit.
