FIELD REPORT(521-LDI-0410) 9 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: KIM, Ik Pong (ROKA)

2. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
PW with 2 men were captured by 7th NKA Div when his unit was overrun at TOKCH’ON 16 Nov 51. PW was indoctrinated for 3 days and was assigned to the 7th Div, 3rd Regt, 3rd Bn. 061800 Feb 51, the 3rd Bn was attacked by US tanks and was ordered to retreat. PW intending to desert made his way toward US troops and gave himself up.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Movement:
O/a 25 Dec 50 - The 7th Div crossed the 38th at CHORTON, NK.
O/a 2 Jan 51 - O/a 2 Jan 51 - The 7th Div arrived at YONGDUN NI (DS 1750).
7 Feb 51 - The 7th Div Hq was in YONGDUN NI (DS 1750) village. The 3rd Regt was ordered to assemble at KUKSABONG (DS 1552). The 1st Regt was believed to be at ANHUNG NYON (DS 2252).

b. Organization and Strength:
7th Div: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt
Each Regt: 3 Bn - 2nd Bn (200 men as of 1 Feb)
Each Bn: 3 Co
Each Co: 3 Plat (with one HMG Sqd)
Casualties: 80 KIA and 20 wounded in 3rd Regt due to US Arty shelling 5 Feb 51. 2 KIA by air attack 3 Feb 51. About 15 men from the 3rd Regt were affected by epidemic, cause of was undetermined. Sick at first complained about headache and chills after 2 days started to bleed from mouth and nose and died after 4 days. Some were evacuated to Regt Hosp and others are evacuated in civilian houses in vicinity.

e. Intentions:
Mission of the 7th Div is to defend area of DS 1552, DS 1550, DS 1852, DS 1850 and meanwhile wait for the so-called 4th General Attack which is contemplated 25 Feb 51.
Ten days ago the 2nd Bn CO at a formation is reported to have said: “Preparations for the Fourth General Offensive are nor being completed. Clothing, food, and other necessary materials are in shipment. This offensive will terminate in PUSAN and will successfully conclude this conflict. The NK Air Force which has been trained in MANCHURIA will participate in this attack. At the present time there are 9 CCF Corps, or 27 CCF Div in KOREA. The CCF will attack in the west and the NKA in the east. In addition there are additional CCF troops 40 - 80 km N of the 7th NK Div who are waiting for the new offensive.”

f. Weapon: (2nd Bn of 3rd Regt)
1x82mm mortar, 1 HMG (Russ), 1 HNG (Jap), 2 LMG (Jap), 2 anti-vehicle rifles (11mm) (Russ), Russ rifles (50%), US M-1 rifles (30%), US carbines (10%), and PPSH SMG (mainly Sqdr Ldr up).

g. Supply: (2nd Bn)
(a) Ammo:
Mortar:42 shells
HMG:750 rd each
Russ rifles : 80 to 100 rd per man
US M-1: Scarce
US carbines: 〃
Hand Grenades: 2 per man
(b) Food: Food supply was low. Locally procured. 2 meals per day. Mainly consisted of rice with soy bean soup. Each man was issued 7 days ration.
(c) Clothing: 300,000 new cotton uniforms were received from CHINA. About half of the troops of 7th NK Div have been provided with these. They are similar in texture and color to the American field jacket, M 1943, and they are not quilted. They were made in TIENTSIN in 1950.
(d) Medicine: Practically none. Due to lack of medicine, most of troops affected by recent epidemic and trench foot were given no medical attention, consequently many patients died. Few lucky ones were given treatment whenever they captured American medicines.

h. Other Units:
6th Div and 12th Div were in vicinity of 7th Div (DS 1750 as of 7 Feb 51). The 6th Div was believed to be composed of Koreans organized in MANCHURIA, and they are well equipped. Mission of the 6th Div is to attack UN Forces from flank and rear and trap them.
Unknown strength of CCF troops at approx 40 km to 80 km N of 7th Div (DS 1750) as of 7 Feb 51.
