2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative. Suffering from third degree frost bite on both feet.
Information extremely limited because PW is completely illiterate, has served only 2 months in NKA, is unfamiliar with military activities, and was unable to recall details about unit.
Reliability of information doubtful.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
1st Sqd, 2nd Plat, 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 29th Regt, had not made contact with UN forces as of 28 Jan 51.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted into 29th Regt, 10th Div early Dec 50 at KUMHWA (CT 6438) with approx 30 others. He received no training.
Departed KUMHWA o/a 12 Dec 50, marched (at night only) over mountain trails with 3rd Bn, 29th Regt, and arrived HWACH'ON (CT8617) d/u.
Departed HWACH'ON, d/u, marched (at night only) over mountain trails through TAEBAEK SAN mountain range, and arrived CHUCH'ON with 3rd Bn, 29th Regt o/a 17 Jan 51.
Departed CHUCH'ON o/a 27 Jan 51, marched with 3rd Bn over mountain trails (traveling at night only), and arrived at village approx 8 km south of CHUCH'ON o/a 28 Jan 51. PW dropped out of his unit at this village because his feet hurt too much to continue walking. A farmer gave PW food and shelter until US troops advanced into village 6 Feb 51 and captured him.

6. REPLACEMENTS:
Approx 30 residents of KUMHWA area were conscripted early Dec 50 into 29th Regt 10th Div. These conscriptees received no training.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
3rd Bn, 29th Regt troops received two bowls of rice daily. Rice was confiscated from Korean farmers in villages through which Bn passed.
3rd Bn, 29th Regt had received no resupply of ammunition, clothing, or other material as of 28 Jan 51. (PW was not even issued a uniform or weapon).

8. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of 3rd Bn was low because many of its personnel were inadequately clothed and fed. Most of the men were in fair physical condition.

9. MEDICAL:
PW noted no cases of disease in the 3rd Bn.
Personnel of 3rd Bn received no immunization while PW was with it. (Dec 50 to 28 Jan 51). There were a few (number unknown) cases of frost bite in the 3rd Bn, although most of the Bn was not suffering from it.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily?
PW surrendered to advancing US troops because he was separated from his unit and had no weapon with which to defend himself.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
No.
c. Can you describe what they said?
No.
d. What was your reaction to them?
Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts?
No.
