FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0106) 4 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: YANG Sun Lin (24) Pvt
DUTY: Rifleman
UNIT: V Corps Hq, Recon Bn (former unit: 38th Div, 1st Regt, 3rd Bn, 8th Co, 1st Plat, 1st Sqd)
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 4 Feb 51 1 mile E of WONJU
CAPTURED BY: 4th Sign Bn
INTERROGATOR: PFC AKASHI

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and gave information voluntarily without hesitation. Information seems very reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW conscripted into NKA in Jun 50 at CHUNCH'ON during the first invasion of SOUTH KOREA.
20 Jan 51 the 38th Div deactivated in the vic of NOCHON-NI (DS1270) and all personnel were reassigned to the 6th, 7th, 12th and 27th Div.
V Corps Recon Bn was newly organized at this time in NOCHON-NI by mustering one plat of 25 men from each regt of the 38th Div.
After organizing the Recon Bn consisting of 200 men, they rested for 12 days.
1 Feb 51 the Recon Bn received orders from V Corps Hq (located 8 km E of NOCHON-NI) to make a reconnaissance of enemy strength and disposition in area of WONJU. Three plat (total of 70 men) were dispatched that day as a recon patrol.
4 Jan 51 Recon patrol arrived 4 km NE of WONJU. After sending out scouts, they found great concentration of UN troops occupying WONJU. The patrol ldr decided to bivouac here for the night and return the following day to NOCHON-NI to report their finding.
PW was a member of this patrol and deserted early morning 4 Feb 51. He believes that Recon patrol is now enroute back to Recon Bn Hq. No further information obtained from PW.

b. Weapon:
(Recon Bn) All armed with rifles (45 rds each) and PPSH SMG (90-100 rds each).

c. Clothing:
All wearing cotton padded winter uniform.

d. Morale:
Old NK soldiers and officers morale very high. Newly inducted troops and South Korean conscripts into army very low.

e. Medical:
Typhoid and flu cases were numerous among troops. One fifth of Recon Bn became sick since organizing.
