PW was cooperative in answering questions, but location and date are uncertain to PW, because of his poor memory. Information obtained seems to be reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology:
O/a 15 Jan 51, 12th Div, 31st Regt (100 men to a Co) came from PYONGYANG and crossed the 38th Parallel. O/a 20 Jan 51 31st Regt came down to a location, approx 16 km N of HOENSONG, and were taking a rest.
28 Jan 51, 2nd Bn came down to 8 km N of HOENSONG to protect Regt CP. The 1st and 3rd Bn were still with the Regt.
28 Jan 51 during the night, 1st Co consisting of 70 to 80 men came down to HOENSONG to engage in a battle with the enemy.
1400 hr 29 Jan 51, the Co engaged in a battle with the enemy and was defeated. They withdrew toward north into the hills, but destination is unk to the PW, because he was wounded and left behind. Captured 4 Feb 51.
b. Weapons:
2nd Bn as of 28 Jan 51 : 2x50mm mortars, 2 HMG, 2 LMG per Co (4,000 rd ea), 1 PPSH SMG to each Sqd Ldr (2 magazines ea), and two third of unit armed with rifles (300 rd per before engagement; ammo could be used in LMG also).
c. Supply:
No ammo supply after crossing the 38th Parallel. Food is obtained from the civilians of villages and seems to be sufficient, with 2-3 meals per day.
d. Uniform:
All wore cotton padded winter uniforms. 50% had on cotton padded shoes, 30% had on canvas shoes and 20% straw shoes.
e. Medical:
Heard from his plat ldr that in other Regt area, there were many cases of illness due to some contagious diseases; therefore, they were warned to be careful and to follow strict sanitary regulations.
20 to 30% of the unit are suffering from frost-bite.
f. Morale:
Morale of soldiers was high, because they believed that they will win this war.
