FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0393) 5 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but of limited information. Reliability fair.

3. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
14 Dec 50 - Inducted into ROK 2nd Div at HOENGSONG.
1 Jan 51 - Subject's unit enveloped by CCF troops at KAPHYONG (SW of CHUNCHON) but subject escaped on 6 Jan 51.
7 Jan 51 - Subject arrived CHUNCHON (CS 8893) and captured by NK troops. He was interrogated by an Interior Ministry Sr. Capt. for about 20 minutes during which period subject was asked personal details, how many men he had killed and whether he had seen any NK PW killed by UN Forces.
Subject was subsequently turned over to the V Corps MP and interned in one of the homes. He observed approx 12 other ROK PW in his area. Prisoners were unguarded and ate 3 meals a day consisting of rice, fish and soup. Meals were eaten together with NK troops.
13 Jan 51 - Subject released and told to return to his home and to tell the people that Communism is good because all men are equal.
4 Feb 51 - Subject apprehended by 2nd Div MP.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Subject while a captive of the enemy observed about 400 NK troops and 600 CCF troops in CHUNCHON near vic of confinement. Heard on 10 Jan 51 that V Corps would be reinforced by another Div.
Approx 80% of NK troops were armed with M-1 Rifles, carbines, PPSH SMG, Russian rifles, and SMG. Such arms were also observed in a house; type and number were as follows:
M-1 Rifles: 60
Carbines: 20
PPSH SMG: 300
Russian rifles: 800
SMG: 80
The CCF troops were all armed with M-1 Rifles and there were about 20 horses.

5. FOOD AND CLOTHING:
Food was plentiful and NK were outfitted in cotton quilts, with some US jackets, while the CCF also wore cotton quilts.

6. MORALE:
High - Chinese and NK did not intermingle.
