PW was captured by elements of the 21st RCT while trying to locate his unit. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. PW was a common laborer prior to entering service. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology:
PW conscripted at HAMHUNG 11 Jul 50. Received basic training at CHORWON CT4335 from 16 Jul 50 to 20 Sep 50. Upon completion of training assigned to 1st NK Div, Arty Regt at KANGGYE, 1 Nov. 16 Nov 50 reassigned to 1st NK Div, 2nd Regt, 3rd Bn, Sig Plat, 1st Sqd and was engaged as a KP. PW stated that the III NK Corps was also located at KANGGYE. The 1st NK Div departed KANGGYE 2 Dec 50 and headed generally SE arriving at HONGWON (coord u/k). Date and time u/k. Stayed there for approx one day. Departed HONGWON and arrived vic HAMHUNG 20 Dec 50. Stayed at HAMHUNG approx three days. Departed HAMHUNG o/a 24 Dec 50 arriving 4 km S of CHONGPYON-NI 25 Dec 50. There observed 3 NK Divisions moving S on road, 25 Dec 50. Departed for SEOUL via CHORWON CT4334, KUMWHA CT6538, HWACHON CT8618, CHUNCHON CS8893, TAEGONG-NI CS6987. Enroute observed 50 CCF troops in vicinity of HWACHON (date and time u/k). Enroute PW became separated from his unit at u/k location 25 Dec 50. Arrived in SEOUL 14 Jan 51. At SEOUL NK Defense Hqs inquired about location of 1st NK Div Hqs. Informed that 1st Div Hqs was located in WONJU DS0833. Departed SEOUL 14 Jan 51 and arrived at u/k village 14 km S of YANGPYONG CS6749. Enroute observed one CCF Regt armed with rifles in vicinity of NAMHANSUN (location u/k) 16 Jan 51. Enroute to YOJU picked up by elements of 21st RCT at CS7228 172100 Jan 51. No hvy wpns or tanks observed throughout journey.

Sig Plat, Med Plat, AT Rifle Plat, and Sup Plat attached to each Bn. One Arty Regt attached to Div (Strength u/k). Each Bn composed of three Rifle Cos and one HMG Co. No of Arty pieces u/k. All other troops armed with PPsh SMGs and rifles.

Food locally procured. Received 200 rds ammo prior to departing KANGGYE. No knowledge of ammo or supply point.
Telephone between companies. Telegraph communication between Regt and Div Hqs. Runners between platoons.
O/a 27 Dec 50 heard from comrade at HWACH’ON that II and V NK Corps existed.
Q - What is the location of training or reorganization center in NK or MANCHURIA?
A - No knowledge
Q - Is the PW’s unit a remnant organization?
A - Yes. The 1st NK Div reorganized o/a 1 Nov 50 at KANGGYE. 75% of troops new conscripts; 25% former members.
Q - Did you see any US, ROKA or other UN POW’s?
A - None observed. Heard that PW enclosure located at HAMHUNG.
Q - What types of transportation utilized?
A - Animal drawn carts to transport supplies.
Q - Did you see any airfield enroute?
A - None observed.
Q - What methods of identification used between CCF and NK troops?
A - All NK troops have red star insignia over visor of cap. Also identified through NK interrogator assigned to CCF units.
Q - What is the present mission and possible future intentions of PW’s unit?
A - No knowledge. O/a 19 Dec 50 PW was informed by unit political leader that the NK Army will fight to the last man to oust UN troops from KOREA.
Q - Did you see any UN leaflets?
A - Picked up UN leaflet dropped by air at KUMHWA on or about 4 Jan 51.
Q - What was your reaction to them?
A - Planned to surrender at first opportunity.
Q - Knowledge of ranking personalities?
A - No knowledge of Div or Regt Commanders. 3rd Bn CO: CHA Sun Kil, Major.
Q - What is most feared by NK troops?
A - Troops demoralized by incessant daylight air attacks. Air attacks also disrupt troop movement during daylight hours.
Q - Knowledge of NK or CCF airborne or amphibious force?
A - No knowledge.
