FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0041) 25 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: LEE Don Pal (25)
RANK: Pvt
DUTY: Rifleman
UNIT: Special Troops, 4th Bn, 2nd Co, Guard Plat
PLACE AND DATE OF CAPTURE: SANCHONG-ni, 24 Nov 50

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evaluation: PW was cooperative in answering questions and information seems reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
PW was convicted of administering internal poison to patient instead of eye drops and was sentenced to 3 yrs in the HAMHUNG Prison 26 Mar 50.
While serving his term, all prisoners were released on parole 29 Sep 50 and marched to WONSAN where the civilian police and prison guard were organizing the Special Troops. Approx 1,400-1,500 prisoners assembled from various prisons in the area. The Special Troop was formed with 4 Bns. Bns had the following strength; 1st Bn 700 men, 2nd Bn 200 men, 3rd & 4th Bns 300 men each. No one was issued rifles except Plat ldrs and Co COs.
5 Oct 50 WONSAN was attacked by ROK Troops and the Special Troops retreated to SHINJANG (BV5322).
25 Oct 50 while SHINJANG was under ROK artillery fire, PW and companion (KIM De Sin, Pvt) deserted unit and escaped to SANGCHO-DONG (BV3521) arriving there on 29 Oct 50. Enroute PW observed 25 NK soldiers resting on top of hill (location unk) half were armed with rifles and the others carried sub-machine guns. 10 men were dressed in summer uniform and 15 men wore winter uniforms. Direction of travel unk. PW stayed in SANGCHO-DONG (BV6521) from 29 Oct 50 to 24 Nov 50 where he was captured.
13 Nov 50 PW observed 4 CCF soldiers buying corn flour. Identified them as Chinese by language differences. All 4 were dressed in cotton padded winter uniform and armed with Japanese rifles.
13 Nov 50 1930 hrs observed along main road leading to TOKCH’ON (BV6904) approx 200 CCF troops marching in single file, all armed with rifles. Each soldier carried across his shoulder a beld of ammo consisting of about 100 rds. Food & supply was carried by about 20 horses. PW also observed 4 light artillery pieces drawn by horses. This was only part of column which rested in SANGCHO-DONG (BV6521). The main body of the march column started to pass village about 2000 hrs and continued to march in single file all night till day break (0500 hrs). Horses and light artillery was observed, number unk.
14 Nov 50 heard rumors that CCF troops (strength unk) marched through SANGCHO-DONG village again. All wore winter uniform and carried rifles. Troops stopped to take corn out of warehouses. Estimated number of troops made by villager approx 2,000.
17 Nov - 18 Nov 50 PW heard from neighbor that CCF troops marched all night continuously toward TOKCH’ON (BV6904).
22 Nov 50 0700 hrs observed approx 500 CCF troops marching in single file dressed in winter uniform carrying rifles, headed towards TOKCH’ON (BV6904). 4 or 5 horse drawn artillery pieces were also seen.
PW asked interpreter where they were going. He was told they were preparing to attack TOKCH’ON.
23 Nov 50 0900 hrs. Observed 40 CCF 50% armed with rifles heading towards mountains back of SANGCHO-DONG. 1600 hrs saw 3 US tanks and 2 jeeps pass towards SANGCHO-DONG turn around and headed back. One hour later PW saw the 40 CCF going back toward TOKCH’ON taking a mt trail.
24 Nov 50 PW was captured by US Troops.
On 20, 21, 22, & 23 Nov 50 PW observed about 300 wounded CCF troops being evacuated to hospital by litter. Civilians were used as litter bearers and they only traveled by night in groups of 20-30 patients. PW was told by a litter bearer that the wounded were taken to PUKSHIN-HYON-MYON (BV6030).

4. ENEMY TACTICS:
PW was told by wounded CCF soldier that their tactics was:
a. Surround enemy in superior numbers.
b. Cut off supply route.
c. Use hand grenade instead of artillery.
d. Attack on rainy days.
e. Wait for cold weather
(CCF soldier was confident that UN Forces will be beaten by the cold weather)
f. Planes will not be used until a strategic time.

5. PROPAGANDA:
a. Promise NK people that CCF will bring food and clothing soon.
b. Promise troops that after KAECH’ON & TOKCH’ON are retaken they will be able to drive the UN Forces southward. It was also informed that UN Force have their strongest troops at these points and there is nothing behind them.
