The 12th Div was at SAMAL, north of SAMGAE-RI, strength approx 5000 men. Div left KANGGYE with mission of taking SAMCHOK and KANGNUNG but was suddenly changed to WONJU-CHECH’ON area after penetrating south of 38th parallel behind enemy lines to engage in guerrilla warfare; to confuse the enemy and prepare way for frontal attack by other units. (Strength of 2nd Bn approx 630 men.)

Bn Tactics: Usually patrols are sent out to ask local people if there are any UN troops in area. If there are reports of any troops in the area, the Div stops and prepares to engage enemy, usually waiting for darkness before they attack. The 12th Div so far has been moving in Div strength.
Mission of 12th Div is to engage in guerrilla tactics in Regt size bands.
12th Div is made up of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt. The 2nd Regt is made up of the 504th (1st Bn), 505th Bn (2nd Bn), 506th Bn (3rd Bn) and 507th Bn (Service Bn).
There were approx 70 men casualties in 2nd Regt.

Heard from Regt CO that the 12th Div objective was to set road-block in the SAMCHOK area. Division is to operate as a guerrilla force behind UN lines. They are to engage and fight units of smaller size than they are. If larger in forces, to break contact and evade them.
3rd Bn consists of Hvy MG Co (saw 3 HMGs), Mortar Co (saw 1 - 82mm mortar) and 3 Rifle Cos (2 LMGs to each Co).
Each company has a strength of about 80 men. 2nd Regt is made up of the 504th Bn (1st Bn), 505th Bn (2nd Bn), 506th Bn (3rd Bn) and 507th Bn (Service Bn).
Each company is supposed to have 9 LMGs but at present they have only two. They were to captured others in their guerrilla activities.
At present only 4 or 5 men have weapons in each squad. The other 4 or 5 are to man crew-served wpns if they captured any.
PW heard from his Sqd Ldr who came from MANCHURIA with 7th Div that 12th Div is the former NK 7th Div which came from MANCHURIA in Apr 50. Because of losses on the Pusan Perimeter, they have been regrouped and redesignated.
To PW’s knowledge 12th Div is in the HOENGSONG area.

Prior to crossing the 38th Parallel the 12th Div passed through SOHA located 36 kms E of YANGGU. Their first opposition encountered was with the ROK unit in vicinity of HYOLRI (?) where they fought to break through the lines. From there they travelled south through TAEBECK Mt. They travelled at a fast rate averaging approx 32 miles a day. For u/k reasons the Div changed their direction and headed towards HONGCH’ON traveling in WNW direction.
310400 Dec 50 Med Plat arrived in SAMGAE-Ri (DS0957) and saw the while 12th Div (5000 men) move out towards HONGCH’ON. About 1100 hrs PW’s unit CO (Jr Lt LEE Kun Ho) and messenger left for Div CP located along road to HONGCH’ON. Unit CO told PW that he will send messenger to notify him of exact location but PW was captured before messenger returned. Med Plat always followed in rear of Regt.
