Mar 40 - Entered MANCHURIA with family. MANCHURIA, CHILIN-SHENG, HOLUNG-HSIEN, TOUTAO-CHU, CHANGJEN-TSUN #13 (滿洲 吉林省 和龍縣 頭道區 長仁村 一三). Farmed.
13 Arp 48 - Inducted into the CHILIN Military District Independent 4th Regt, 3rd Bn, 9th Co, 2nd Plat, 7th Sqd. The Regt was stationed at TUNHUA (敦化).
7 Sep 48 - Regt was transferred to SSUPING (四平) and integrated into the 18th Div of the 6th Army Group.
15 Oct 48 - 18th Div moved into the vicinity of PEIPING (北平) and conducted combat training.
Oct 49 - The 18th Div marched all the way from PEIPING to KWANTUNG (廣東) in China and fought with the Nationalists.
4 Feb 50 - The Korean members of 18th Div were separated from the Chinese and left at KWANGTUNG (廣東).
20 Feb 50 - Arrived at CHENGCHOU (鄭州) where the Koreans from various Units were assembled and organized into the Korean 12th Division.
14 Apr 50 - Entered KOREA and reached WONSAN (元山) via SINUIJU.
25 Jun 50 - The 12th Div was renamed the NK 7th Div.
There were 3 Inf Divs in the 6th Army including the 18th Div. PW stated that he did not know the unit designation of the other two Divs.
(1) 18th Div with other various units engaged in the envelopment campaign of PEIPING in Nov and Dec 49.
(2) 18th Div and 2 other Divs engaged in the campaign for CANTON (廣東). The city was occupied in Sep 49.
The unit was located at CHIANGWEN (江■) at the time PW parted from his unit in 4 Feb 50. CHIANGWEN was located approx 80km SE of KWANGTUNG.
Only the Korean members were transferred to KOREA. There were about 1,200 out of the 18th Division.
All the soldiers of the CCF received an average pay of about 15,000 yuan. The officers received about 20,000 yuan. The extra 5,000 yuan was to cover clothing expenses.
The CCF unit which captured the Nationalist troops organized what was called a Liberation Unit. PW stated that all the captured PWs were interrogated about their personal history. PW was asked whether he would like to return home or join the CCF. If a PW chose to return home, he was given a rice ration ticket and some money to buy rice. The ticket was only good while in the territory occupied by the CCF. No matter how many times a Nationalist soldier was captured, he was given his choice of returning home or joining the CCF; and if he chose to return home, he was allowed to do so without punishment. If the captured Nationalist soldier desired to join the CCF, he was given 3 months political education with the Liberation Unit. The unit followed the Division where ever it moved. There was no discrimination based on educational background.
The officers who desired to join the CCF received 3 months political education with the Captured Officers Training Unit. PW stated that all the captured Nationalist troops after graduating the 3 month education course were assigned to various CCF units.
They were demoted one rank when they were assigned and were given their original rank soon after they proved that they were efficient.
During the 3 months political education, they were educated according to their educational background.
