FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0045) 26 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHANG Sho Chong

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW very uncooperative and has tendency to withhold info. During the course of interrogation PW contradicted himself by giving different answers each time the same question was brought up at a different time. info unreliable.
Recommended for further interrogation.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
359th Regt arrived ANTUNG, MANCHURIA approx 40 days ago from WULUNG-PEI (XE0656). However, only 2nd Bn crossed into KOREA at that time. They waded across the YALU River in the vicinity of SINUIJU (XE1940). At that time PW heard from u/k source that 18th and 19th Div of the 40th Army were already in KOREA.
2nd Bn crossed various mountains and roads reaching the mountain located 16 KMs E of UNSAN (YE3927) o/a 26 Oct. PW did not know the route they took. During the course of their travel PW saw (date u/k) approx 100 trucks hauling ammo and supplies into KOREA from MANCHURIA. These supplies were being brought in daily from MUKDEN and ANTUNG, MANCHURIA and these trucks traveled day and night taking different routes each time. Destination of these trucks u/k.
PW’s Bn rested at above mountain for approx 2 weeks and then moved 6 KMs north of UNSAN o/a 10 Nov 50 where elements of 120th Div was assembling. O/a 23 Nov 50 all of the 120th Div moved southward, but when 359th Regt made camp 12 KMs N of KUJANG (BV4517) 24 Nov 50 other elements of 120th Div was not seen. (Whereabouts of other Regt or Div CP u/k.) Following day PW received orders from Bn Commander to move his company and attack enemy located in KUJANG. 2nd Bn moved out first, followed by 3rd and 1st Bn. At this time Regt CP was with the 3rd Bn. When 2nd Bn reached CHONCHONG River, PW did not see the 3rd Bn or the 1st Bn but he believes that they made the river crossing at different location unknown to him.
2nd Bn made the attack 1800 hrs 25 Nov 50 by crossing a ford CHONCHONG River south of KUJANG-DONG. 4th and 5th Companies made the crossing and the 6th Company brought up the rear. When PW’s company was half way across the river they received artillery and HMG fire. After crossing the river the 6th Co took cover receiving heavy bombardment all night. Following morning 1000 hrs 26 Nov 50, PW ordered his men to stop firing and surrendered to the UN Forces. At the time of surrender PW had only 20 men left in his company, and believes other men of the Bn were completely wiped out.

4. STRENGTH:
6th Company strength prior to CHONCHONG River crossing (500 men) Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Cos and Hq Co (120 men in each Company). Each Company has 3 plats and 1 heavy weapons plat.

5. WEAPONS (Company)
32 Jap 38 model rifles (100 rds ea); 9 LMGs (1000 per); 2 HMGs; 3x60mm mortars (30 shells); 4 pistols (40-50 rds ea) and 250 hand grenades.

6. PERSONALITIES:
Corps Cmdr - HAN ?? (age 35); Div Cmdr - HWAN Kwo Chun (35); Regt Cmdr - LEE ?? (25) and Bn Cmdr - SUL Lee Ye (31).

7. SUPPLIES:
Food supplies were sufficient since they were brought from MANCHURIA and most of their food was always confiscated from villages and farms. Ammo, mortars and HMG were carried by 20 horses belonging to this Bn.

8. MORALE:
Morale of troops was low. Before crossing the Manchurian border the troops were in high spirit, however since the long marches and bitter coldness of weather, all troops were tired.
