PW was in good physical condition at time of interrogation and of average intelligence. Information obtained considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology:
PW conscripted 15 July 1950 at WONSAN where he received three months of basic training. Upon completion of training PW was assigned to 249th Marine Brigade, 5th Bn. The 5th Bn was despatched to defend HUNGNAM. 15 Oct 50 5th Bn withdrew to CHANJIN and arrived on or about 22-23 Oct. PW heard that remainder of 249th Brigade was defeated and disorganized at WONSAN. 19 Dec 50 5th Bn arrived at location approx 16 km N of HAMHUNG. 20 Dec 50 5th Bn (300 strength) was integrated into the 1st Rifle Div. Strength of 1st Div u/k to PW at that time. Approx 100 men were assigned to each regiment. 1st Div departed this location 24 Dec 50 and arrived MUNCHON 26 Dec 50. PW became ill on 27 Dec 50 and was told to report to SEOUL by 4 Jan 51. Departed MUNCHON 2 Jan 51 and arrived at KUMHWA (CT 6538) o/a 8 Jan 51 via SINGO-SAN and SEPO-RI. At KUMHWA (CT6538) PW heard from villages that approx one regiment of CCF troops departed for CHOLWON on or about 5 Jan 51. No enemy (CCF or NK) observed throughout trip. PW then proceeded to HUNCHON and arrived o/a 10 Jan 51. PW again heard from villager that one CCF regiment departed for CHORWON on 100200 Jan 51. PW departed this location 110800 Jan and arrived at SEOUL 140700 Jan 51 via CHUNCHON (CS8893) and TAEGONG-NI (CS7988). No CCF or NKA troops observed enroute. 140900 Jan 51 PW went to the I NK Corps Hq located at the capital building in SEOUL to inquire the whereabouts of the 1st Div. PW was told to travel E. No further information given. No CCF troops observed in SEOUL. PW departed SEOUL 141600 Jan 51 and arrived at NAMHAN-SAN on 151700 Jan 51. PW observed CCF troops at this location and asked a CCF interpreter if they will accommodate him for the night. The interpreter refused stating that this was a regimental headquarters. Interpreter further stated that they will leave for the 38th parallel within 2-3 days to be relieved by another CCF regiment. No heavy weapons observed at this location. Traveling generally SE PW arrived at u/k village after walking approx 20 km from NAMHAN-SAN. Observed approx one regt of CCF on 161400 Jan 51. PW was picked up approx 4 km NW of YOJU on 172100 Jan at CS7228.
b. PW’s Unit:
1st Div is composed of three Inf Regt; 2nd, 3rd (?), and 14th Regts. Three Bn composed each regiment. Each Bn is composed of three infantry companies, one HMG company, one antitank rifle plat, one medical plat, one signal plat and one supply plat. Code number of units u/k to PW.

d. Leaflets
PW read leaflets and gave them some thought and was in doubt. Others who read the leaflets were also in doubt. The leaflets stated that they will be well fed and have shelter if they throw away their weapons and surrender. No broadcast heard.
