1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and has much military service. He produced information freely and talked with an air of confidence. Information seems reliable.

3. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted 3 March 1934 at SHANGHAI into the CNA.
Commissioned 2nd Lt in Jun 40 in the CNA.
Promoted to 1st Lt Jul 42.
Promoted to Capt Mar 45.
Captured by the CCF 27 Jan 49 at PEKING (北京) and was assigned to the present unit with the rank of Capt.
The entire 66th Army departed PEKING 15 Mar 49 and arrived at TA-TUNG-SHIH (大同市) 3 Apr 49.
66th Army departed TA-TUNG-SHIH 25 May 49 and arrived at TIEN-CHING (天津) 27 May 49.
Entire 66th Army departed TIEN-CHING 22 Oct 50 and arrived at ANTUNG on 25 Oct 50 by train.
Entire 66th Army crossed a steel bridge at 251900 Oct 50 and arrived in SINUIJU, KOREA.
Entire 66th Army passed through TONNIM, SUNCH’ON, TONGJU, TAECH’ON, PAKCHON, PAKCHAN NI, PYONGGAM, MASAN NI, KUMWHA, TANGUDONG and arrived at SACHANG NI 29 Dec 50. 66th Army had been engaged for 3 hours in combat at TAECH’ON.
(Order of march to present location was: 196th Div, 197th Div, 198th Division and 66th Army Hqs).
PW deserted his unit on 290400 Dec 50, 4 Km South of SACHANG NI and surrendered to the ROK Forces 300800 Dec 50 at CHICHON NI (CT 8210).

The present estimated strength of the 196th Division is 8,000 men. (Approx 13,000 formerly)
Estimated present strength of the 66th Army is 30,000 (Approx 40,000 formerly).

5. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
66th Army Hq was located in MASAN NI (approx 8 Km N of SACHANG NI (CT 7014), (heard 29 Dec 50). The Headquarters may have moved to a different location.
196th Div Hq was located on the HWASAN Mountain, in the general area of SACHANG NI. It arrived there o/a 29 Dec 50.
587th Regt Hq was located in SACHANG NI, as of 30 Dec 50.
Entire 196th Div was located in an 8 Km square area in the NNW sector of SACHANG NI.
197th Div was located on the western flank of the 196th Div.
The 198th Div was located approx 4 Km to the rear of these two (2) divisions as a reserve unit.
66th Army arrived in the SACHANG NI area on 29 Dec 50 and was engaged in stocking ammo and supplies for a proposed offensive which is supposed to commence on 1 Jan 51 at an unknown hour.
Entire 42nd Army is located approx 8 Km West of the 66th Army and the 50th Army is located approx 8 Km West of the 42nd Army.
On the night of 26 Dec 50, 3 ROK soldiers were captured by a CCF patrol and were interrogated. Outcome of the interrogation was unknown. However, 27 Dec 50, the 587th Regimental Commander was heard to say that the entire 66th Army was to attack the ROK 2nd Division which was located approx 4 Km in front of them.
Usually when the CCF attacked, they outnumbered the enemy, 5 to 1.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
PW estimated that the CCF units have on hand, enough ammunition to last them 2 to 3 days of combat.
Ammo for the mortars were insufficient and they might not be used in the offensive.
Food was received once or twice daily, procured from the villages and towns. No food stockpiles were seen.

8. MORALE:
Morale of troops was low. The troops were in poor physical condition.
Upon listening to unit commanders’ speeches of securing KOREA by 5 Jan 51, many of them laughed it off as impossible.
