Average intelligence, very cooperative but due to short time in service not able to give details. Further interrogation is not recommended.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Inducted 20 Aug 50 at P’YONGCH'ANG (平昌). No training. Approx 1,000 replacements departed P’YONGCHANG 20 Aug 50 - marched arrived WONJU (原州) 22 Aug 50. 1,000 men departed WONJU 22 Aug - marched - arrived TANYANG (丹陽) 24 Aug 50. 1,000 men departed TANYANG 24 Aug 50 - marched - via ANDONG (安東), UISONG (義城). From UISONG marched to point 8 km N of YONGCH'ON arriving 8 Sep 50 (Assigned to 15th Div, 50th Regt, 2nd Bn, 3rd Co, 3rd Plt, 3rd Sqd). 8 km N of YONGCH’ON 1,000 men were divided and PW and approx 200 men were divided into groups of 7 men each. PW and 6 men were called the 3rd Sqd. 7 men deserted the unit 10 1330 Sep 50 with intentions of surrendering and went toward ROK Army lines where they were captured by ROK troops.
Weapons and Personnel:
At 8 km N of YONGCH'ON on 8 Sep 50 200 men were armed with 120 x M1891/30 rifle (30 rounds per rifle), 3 x DT Tank machinegun, 4 x DP LMG (2 drums per one gun), 80 hand grenades (half F-1 defensive and half RG-42 offensive HG).
Supplies:
Average of one rice ball a day, officers ate rice average twice a day. Ammunition last received at 8 km N of YONGCH’ON.
Communications:
Around 27 Aug 50 PW saw one field phone 8 km N of YONGCH'ON. PW thinks that was 2nd Bn Hq because he heard Co does not have field phones. PW knows that runners are used between Plt and Co, also between Co and Bn.
Enemy Intentions:
Objective of 15th Div was PUSAN via YONGCH’ON.
Morale and Propaganda:
Morale: Low because of insufficient food, training and family worries. On 8 Sep 50 at 6 km N of YONGCH’ON about 20 men tried to desert from unit. 4 were shot in the back and the rest of the 16 men had to remain with the unit being watched carefully. PW never heard of or saw any leaflets.
4. GENERAL:There were two powerful pro-communists in KANGWON Do, P‘YONGCH’ANG GUN, PANGIM MYON, PANGIM NI. They were vary cooperative with the communist NK govt. These two men were supporting the Red government and trying to convert all of the Villagers to communism. These men are: CHO Su Myon (조수영). age 45 and CH’OE Chong T’ae (최종태), age 28.
