2. ASSESSMENT:
PW in normal health. Cooperative.
a. Account of captures:
Approximately 0500 hrs on 9 Sep 50 platoon. leader of PW's unit of 40 men were ordered to attack Hill #236.8. When they were in the ravine ROK troops on the crest of hill opened fire with mortars, HMG’s, LMG's and rifles. 20 were killed, 5 escaped and 15 were taken prisoner.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
PW was inducted and trained at SINUIJU (新義州) on 7 Jul 50. Training consists of 30 minutes calisthenics and 6 hrs of combat tactics. 560 men were trained using wooden rifles. Departed SINUIJU 3 Aug 50 on train and arrived TANYANG 10 Aug 50. Departed TANYANG 11 Aug 50 on foot and arrived ANDONG 12 Aug 50. Departed ANDONG 13 Aug 50 on foot and arrived YONGCHON 8 Sep 50. 560 men arrived YONGCH’ON. 7 Sep 50 520 men proceeded ahead and 40 men were left behind until 8 Sep 50 and held their position near Hill #236.8. 9 Sep 50, taken prisoner.

a. Original Organization & Strength:
73rd Ind Regt - approx 1,680 men (3 Bn’s), 1st Bn approx 560 men, Mortar Co strength unk, HMG Co - 66 men. 1st Co - approx 40 men (2 plt's), 1st Plt - 20 men (2 Sqd's), 2nd Sqd - 10 men.

b. Equipment:

3 x MAXIM HMG M1910
30 x PPsh M1941 SMG's
9 x 85mm AT gun
3 x ZIS-151 truck
4 x TAM field phone

c. Intentions:
Objective was YONGCH'ON when the unit departed SINUIJU.

d. Knowledge of other units:
In YONGCH'ON PW’s is unit was told by plt ldr that 104th Regt was on the left or east of 73rd Independent Regt and 7th Regt was to the rear (north).

e. Propaganda:
PW did not see or hear of propaganda. leaflets. PW claims all his relatives were in SEOUL and did not have any intentions of fighting against South Koreans.
PW's were told that in event they were captured by ROK troops their eyes would be dug out, ears would be cut off and they would be tortured by various means. PW fools that if there is any way of convincing the North Korean soldiers how the PW's are quartered, fed, clothed and treated a great number of soldiers will surrender.
