PW was cooperative. Only limited information was offered, evidently because of his limited service.
ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF UNIT:As of 8 Sep 50: 1st Sq - 6 men, armed with one (1) LMG, 2 magazines, One (1) PPsh SMG, M1891/30 Rifles, 40 rds per man.
1st Plt - 24 men, armed With 4 LMGs, 4 PPsh SMGs.
8th Co - 80 men, one (1) HMG, 3 Ammo boxes; 12 LMGs, 12 PPsh SMGs.
PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:Inducted on 5 Jul 50 at Najin (羅津) into 1st replacement Regt which was composed of 3000 men. Trained as rifleman for one month at NAJIN. PW and 3000 men received M1891/30 rifles, 40 rds and departed NAJIN o/a Aug by train.
PW stated that during the day the train was stopped in tunnels.
They arrived at CHUNCHON (春川) o/a Aug. Stopped overnight, departed CHUNCHON d/u Aug. Marched - arrived HAMCHANG (咸昌) d/u Aug, rested 2 days, and departed HAMCHANG d/u Aug - marched - arrived 20 km N of YONGCHON (永川). There PW and 3000 men were assigned to various units in 15th Div. D/u Aug PW and his Bn advanced southward and arrived 500 m N of YONGCHON (永川) on 8 Sep 50.
PW separated from his unit after machine gun firing and artillery shelling. He was captured by ROK at 0900 hrs, 8 Sep 50 at 500 m N of YONGCHON (永川).
FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:No food delivered after they departed CHUNCHON. Received rice from farmers.
Ammunition last received at NAJIN. PW never had an opportunity to fire; original issued ammo left at time of capture.
ENEMY INTENTIONS:Objective of 15th Div was TAEGU via YONGCHON.
NK AF AND NAVY:In first part of Aug 50, PW observed four (4) transports which were anchored in a part of NAJIN. Detailed information unknown.
S KOREAN SENTIMENT:PW stated that they only traveled over mountains during the night. Consequently he had no contact with SK civilians.
