PW was cooperative, however, limited information due to lack of service.
3. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNITS:3rd Bn: 500 men, including 300 replacements armed with 3 mortars, 3 HMG’s.
7th Co: 120 men, armed with one (1) HMG, 3 ammo boxes, one (1) mortar, 12 LMG’s.
3rd Plt: 40 men, armed with 4 LMG’s.
1st Sqd: 10 men, armed with one (1) LMG, 2 magazines, M1899/30 rifles and 300 rounds, 2 grenades per man.
4. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:Inducted on 21 Jul 50 at SARIWON (沙里院) into the 3rd Replacement Rept. Received 7 days of basic training at SARIWON. PW and 2,000 unarmed men departed SARIWON on 4 Aug by railroad - arrived at SINCHON (新村) approx 5 Km West of SEOUL RR Station on 10 Aug; on same day PW marched through SEOUL and walked across the HAN RR Bridge which was repaired with wood but still impassable to trains; arrived at SUWON (date unknown). Stayed overnight and departed SUWON (d/u) Aug 50 - marched and arrived at HAMCHANG d/u Aug 50. Departed HAMCHANG d/u Aug 50 - marched and arrived at UISONG (義城). Stayed overnight, departed UISONG d/u Aug 50 - marched - arrived 7 Km SE of KUNWI (軍威) on 28 Aug 50. Here, PW and 2,000 replacements were assigned to various units in 1st Division by political officers. After being assigned, PW received a M1899/30 rifle, 300 rounds and 2 grenades. PW and his unit (3rd Bn) separated from the Regt and advanced about 2 Km south. Here PW and 3 other squad men deserted from unit on 30 Aug 50 and were captured by ROK on same day.
5. ARTILLERY:Two (2) 85mm AT Gun were observed at fact of mountain which was about 5 Km SW of UISONG (義城).
6. FOOD AND SUPPLIES:Received an average of 2 rice balls a day; all the rice was confiscated from farmers, never brought from north.
Average of 400 rounds of rifle ammunition per man issued at vicinity of HAMCHANG (咸昌) and brought to the 1st Div.
7. ENEMY INTENTIONS:PW was told by political officer that he was not to give up but to fight and never surrender. If he was to surrender; he would be shot.
8. SOUTH KOREAN SENTIMENTS:PW states that he travelled during the night and never had a chance to get to know any of the South Koreans.
