2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was carrying 2 cans of MG ammo (150 rds each) when he decided to quit fighting and give himself up. He voluntarily sought out UN forces and surrendered. PW was told by plt ldr and political officer that if captured by UN forces he would be killed. PW didn’t believe them. PW surrendered 7 Sep 50 in KASAN (架山) Area. Not recommended for further interrogation by higher headquarters.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
PW carried M1891/30 rifle. 2 x RG-42 offensive grenade. 2 x MAXIM HMG M1910 (on M1931 Dual-purpose mount) in 1st plt, 4 x HMG in Co, PW left home 7 Jul 50. Inducted same day in SARIWON. PW received 8 days of basic training with 1,000 men and balance of time was spent waiting. PW received rifle, 4 rounds of ammo and with 1,000 replacements left SARlWON by train on 24 Jul 50. Arrived SINMAK (新幕) 25 Jul 50. PW left SINMAK 26 Jul 50 by train and arrived KUMCH’ON 27 Jul 50. PW left KUMCH’ON 28 Jul 50 and arrived SEOUL by train 29 Jul 50. PW left SEOUL by train 30 Jul 50 and arrived WONJU 31 Jul 50. PW left WONJU (原州) 1 Aug 50 marched and arrived CH’ONGJU (淸州) 4 Aug 50. PW left CH’ONGJU 5 Aug 50 by trucks and arrived HAMCH’ANG (咸昌) 6 Aug 50. PW left HAMCH’ANG 7 Aug 50 marched and arrived KASAN Area 9 Aug 50.
Out of 1,000 men who were new replacements approx 970 reached the KUNSAN Area. Approx 30 men deserted the unit. PW with 30 others deserted unit 9 Aug 50 and walked over trails back to HAMCH’ANG. PW was arrested l2 Aug 50 and spent 4 days with 8 of his companions in jail in HAMCH’ANG. PW with his companions were taken by truck to KUNWI on 17 Aug 50 and arrived 18 Aug 50. PW with approx 80 other deserters were given additional basic trainig and lectures. A HMG Co was formed, consisting of all 80 men. PW left KUNWI 2 Sep 50 and arrived at the KASAN Area 3 Sep 50. From 3 Sep 50 till surrender PW worried as ammunition bearer.

1st Div unk, 1st Regt unk, 1st Regt CO’s name LEE Hyon Kwon (李賢權), 1st Bn unk, HMG Co 80 men, CO’s name PAK Son Yun (朴善尹), 1st Plt - 14 men 5 Sep 50. Out of 80 men in HMG Co, 8 were KIA did 7 WIA on 6 Sep 50. 1st Plt ldr killed & 1 man wounded 7 Sep 50, prior to PW surrender to UN forces.

Communications:
PW claims that railway from SARIWON to WONJU via SEOUL was in good condition. Newly constructed RR bridges seen. Roads bad. Fighter & bomber aircraft were seen by PW. At time of aircraft approach, soldiers took cover & PW claims there were no casualties from the aircraft strafing up to date or his surrender.

Intentions:
To take T’AEGU.

Morale:
The morale of the 1st Div troops was very low. PW claims about 2/3 of troops went to surrender or desert but were afraid that they would be killed by their officers. Political officer of the HMG Co was wounded. Name unk.

Airfields:
No information.

REMARKS:
PW heard his Company commander say that there were 20 x Div’s in the NKPA. Did not hear or see propaganda leaflets.
