FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0280) 11 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and seemed to be intelligent. Source was a former ROK soldier (6th Div, 7th Regt, 3d Bn) captured by CCF 1 Nov 50. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
O/a 1 Nov 50, source was captured by CCF at NAEHYON SAN but escaped 10 Nov 50 and captured again by NKA 12th Div on same day.
9 Mar 51, source escaped his unit when the 1st Bn staged an attack on UN troops. Source then hid during the night and was apprehended by French troops 100600 Mar 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission:
12th Div came into vic 6 km NE of DS218507 o/a 28 Feb 51 to set up defensive position in that area. Heard from Bn and Co CO that the 12th Div was to conduct a delaying action so as to give the rear units time to prepare for the general offensive.

b. Disposition:
Elements of the 12th Div were the 1st, 2d and 3d Regt. From 4 Mar to 9 Mar 51, the 2d Regt with its three Bn were deployed at vic 3 km NE of DS218507 while the other two Regt were in line on the 2d Regt west flank. Also heard from Plat Ldr 9 Mar 51, that the 6th Div and an unidentified Div from the V Corps were on the 12th Div east flank. Also heard that elements of the III Corps were also in the same vic as the V Corps.

c. TO & E:
1st Bn, estimated strength about 200 men, was comprised of three rifle Co (30 men ea), one HMG Co (30 men), and one Mortar Co (40 men). Mortar Co had 2x82mm mortars (50 rd ea) and Sqd Ldr had PPSH SNG (150-200 rd ea). Rest of the men were not armed.
HMG Co had 2 HMG and the men had PPSH HMG and rifles.
Weapons in the Rifle Co were LMG ea and small arms were PPSH SMG and rifles.

d. Communication:
Heard from Plat Ldr that the 1st Bn had 1 radio operated by the Comm Plat. Officer in charge of Comm Plat was a Korean who spoke Chinese.

e. Officers:
Approx three-fourths of the officers in the 12th Div spoke fluent Chinese and all confidential conversations were in Chinese.

f. Disease:
Saw a patient in 1st Bn who was very sick and he heard from the Plat Ldr that the man had typhoid fever. Symptoms were high fever, headache, chills and purplish lips.

g. Food:
Insufficient.

h. Morale:
Believed to be fairly high among troops for they never complained about anything.

i. Replacement:
Negative. 1st Bn received 100 replacements 1 Feb 51 when the 38th Div was disorganized.
