FIELD REPORT (24 DIV LDI No Number) 16 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LEE, Song Oh (Korean)
AGE: 27
RANK: Capt (Company Commander)
UNIT: 8th Div (ROKA), 21st Regt, 1st Bn, Mortar Co.
INTERROGATOR: CMA

2. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION:
Unit was enveloped by elements of CCF at NYONGWON 25 Nov 50. 250400 Nov 50 unit was overrun and became disorganized and 300 ROK troops (including Regt CO) wandered around in mountains for 3 days.
281630 Nov 50, subject led 15 men and marched towards easterly direction arriving at unk location 300400 Nov 50. Arriving at this location encountered 80 NK troops (Guerrilla unit) and engaged in fire fight. 300700 Nov 50 the group (15) was captured by enemy troops and interned at this location for 2 days. 2 Dec 50 the group was transferred to the 6th NKA Div Hq PW Enclosure 9 km S of TOKCHON. At this PW Enclosure observed 500 PW (ROK).
No American of other UN Forces PW observed. Officers and NCO were segregated from regular troops and interrogated. The following questions were asked:
1. Name, Age, Rank, and Address.
2. Unit composition.
3. Chronology.
EM received political indoctrination during confinement. Stated that strength of 6th NK Div 4000 men.
132100 Dec 50 escaped, disguised as a NK officer with another ROK PW (T/Sgt) and head N to P’YONGYANG where his family and relatives reside. Intention was to have relatives assist him to escape south by boat and sail along the West Coast to friendly territory.
150530 Dec 50 recaptured by CCF troops vic SUWON and turned over to the 43d NK Div 25 to 26 km NE of HONGCHON DS0273.
042000 Jan 51 again escaped and proceeded towards general direction of HONGCHON and arrived at village SW of PORYONG-NI CS 8355 061700 Jan 51.
061730 Jan 51 captured again by CCF troops at PORYONG-NI and taken to PW Enclosure 3 km N of YOJU. No US or other UN Forces PW observed.
9 Jan 51 withdrew N to CHIPYONG-NI CS 7948. Stayed at CHIPYONG-NI until 19 Jan 51. Departed 19 Jam 51 and proceeded generally northerly direction arriving at CHENYONG-NI (12 to 13 km N of KAPYONG CS 6986) 23 Jan 51. Enroute observed 80 to 90 horse packs heading N. At this location observed 130 ROK PW (100 wounded). Heard from CCF officer 23 US PW (2 officers) departed this location on 22 Jan 51 and taken to an Army Hq in the rear.
311900 Jan 51 with 30 ROK PW taken to village 3 km NW of KAPYONG.
021000 Feb 51 with 4 ROK PW escaped and proceeded S arriving at a village vic of KAREGOL CS 632704. Befriended by villagers and stayed at this village until picked up by elements of 19th RCT, 24th Div. No heavy weapons or tanks observed during entire journey.

Tactical:
1 Co of CCF deployed in an arc extending from Hill 755 CS 615699 to Hill 558 CS 635716 to CS 644710. 3x60mm mortars positions on N slope of Hill 558. 2 LMG positions on peak of Hill 558.
10 Mar 51 heard from villagers 1 division of CCF troops retreated N across the PUKHAN River utilizing road on dam CS 610758. Believes dam is still intact.
130500 Mar 51 bridge at CS 639731 was demolished by rear guard troops. Also other small bridges were destroyed.
As of 13 Mar 51 supply point was located at HOEGONG-NI CS 634735.
7 days ago heard from villager that retreating CCF troops were to assemble at CHORWON CT 4334. Heard defense positions were being prepared along the 38th parallel.
