FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI -0271) 9 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and responded to questions intelligently, however being a rifleman, he was only familiar with units within the Bn. Information fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
While the 3d Bn, 3d Regt, NK 12th Div was retreating from vic of hill 254 (DS 193442) because of heavy UN attack, PW deserted his unit with the intention of surrendering and hid in the hills DS.190443 for one night and surrendered to US troops 091000 Mar 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Intention:
1 Mar 51 the 2d & 3d Bn of 3d Regt, NK 12th Div retreated from a village (8 km E of Hill 254) to Hill 254 (DS 193442) and established a defense position to block UN traffic at road junction DS 188441.
Every man was ordered to dig fox holes 6’ x 3’ x 4’ and also a dugout within the fox hole so that they can roll into it in case of air attack or air observation.

b. Strength:
Strength of the 3d Bn was estimated to be about 230 men, each Co had approx 45-50 men with 17 men to each plat.

c. Disposition:
PW was never informed of the whereabouts of the 1st, 2d Regt or Regt Hq.

d. Other Units:
Learned from Plat ldr the 4 Mar 51 that the 6th & 7th Div were in the rear, resting for the 4th phase offensive.

e. Withdrawal:
081700 the 3d Bn ordered to abandon position and withdraw in direction of HONGCHON. 2d Bn was still intact in their positions on the 3d Bn W flank.
Deserted when they started to withdraw and remained in vic of DS 190443.
The following morning 9 Mar 51 PW noticed that the 2d Bn also withdrew during the night. He then surrendered to the US troops on Hill 254.

f. Platoon Leaders:
Plat Ldr in the 3d Bn were all educated in MANCHURIA and spoke Chinese. Confidential orders between plat ldr were in Chinese.

g. Weapons:
(7th Co) 2 x 81mm mortars, 11 HMG troops had either Russian rifle 200 rd or PPSH SMG and 300 rd each. 3 hand grenades per man.

h. CCF:
Two Chinese soldiers were observed 6 Mar 51 on Hills DS 193442.

i. Clothing:
All issued winter uniforms.

j. Food:
Insufficient, fed twice daily, rice and wheat confiscated from villages.

k. Physical Condition:
Not healthy because of lack of food and no medical care.

l. Disease:
None among troops. No immunizations given.

m. Morale:
Low, because units are weak in strength and not getting replacements.
