PW appears to be in good physical condition, Attitude: cooperative; Intelligence: average. Conscripted into the CCF in Feb 50. Limited military information. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Unit Strength:
Strength of the company when it went into defensive position was thirty. Company position was hit by devastating artillery shelling. Believes most of the men in his company were killed or wounded. Estimates the battalion strength to be about 100.
b. Unit Disposition:
Company left the 50th Army area, on the night of 9 Mar 51. Marched to the east and arrived at the PUKHAN River early in the morning of 10 Mar 51. Crossed the river in small boats and established defensive position on Hill 340 CS541598. Co CP was on Hill 340. Believes the CP was destroyed by UN artillery fire.
PW left position to surrender, believing the rest of the company was annihilated.
c. Unit Mission:
Upon reaching the PUKHAN River, the company commander issued orders to defend Hill 340.
d. Adjacent Unit:
Upon reaching Hill 340, the company commander stated that elements of another unit were in the same vicinity.
e. Weapons:
Company had rifles and hand grenades. Company had no crew-served weapons.
f. Food:
Insufficient.
g. Morale:
Morale is low among troops because of the lack of food and fear of UN artillery and air attacks.
h. Propaganda:
PW has surrender leaflet in his position.
i. Replacements:
About two weeks ago, the company received six replacements. Majority of the replacements are conscripts. Some do not know how to fire a rifle.
