FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0279) 11 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was not intelligent nor observant. Information received seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Source claims that he was a former ROK soldier of 8th Div, 10th Regt, 2d Bn, 8th Co. He was captured by unk NK troops at MAENGSAN, in early Dec 50 and then turned over to V Corps, Replacement Regt. O/a 18 Jan 51, source was transferred to 12th Div, 2d Regt, 2d Bn, 4th Co, but 8 Mar 51, deserted at HWADONG-NI(DS3356)? and voluntarily surrendered to UN Troops.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
O/a 30 Jan 51, 12th Div, 2d Regt, consisting of approx 1,000 man crossed the 38th Parallel and arrived vicinity of CHUNCHON, NASAN-DONG(CS9994) area o/a 2 Feb 51.
O/a 10 Feb 51, 2d Bn of 2d Regt, 12th Div, consisting of approx 500 men advanced to HONGCHON-GUN, NAM-MYON (vic of DS8052) and stayed for approx 15 days.
O/a 25 Feb 51, 2d Bn moved to approx 12 km S of SINDAE-RI (DS3050) and dug in on a hill for 2 days, but did not engage in battle.
6 Mar 51 the 2d Bn came to the vicinity of WHADONG-NI and the 4th Co of 2d Bn was dug in on a hill on south side of a wide road.

b. Disposition:
Heard from his sqd ldr that the 5th and 6th Co of 2d Bn were deployed on east flank of 4th Co.

c. Mission:
Heard from his sqd ldr that the mission of 4th Co was to hold the hill at all cost.
On the morning of 8 Mar 51, 4th Co (approx 45 men) engaged UN troops, but due to heavy arty fire and air strikes o/a 1500hr on the same day, every soldier in Co scattered.

d. Weapons:
4th Co of 2d Bn Regt, 12th Div had 1 HMG, 4 LMG 250 rd, ea, 2 BAR and remainder of men carried rifles with about 100 rd ea. Higher ranking men carried PPsh SMG with 500 rd ea.

e. 4th Phase Offensive:
O/a 5 Mar 51, heard from his plat ldr that in the 4th Phase Offensive, there will be 3,000 jet planes in the air every day, many tanks, arty and all modern weapons will be used. CCF will also participate in the attack.

f. Ammo Supply: O/a 15 Feb 51 each soldier received 50 rd of rifle ammo.

g. Food Supply: 2 meals per day; obtained from villages, was insufficient.

h. Clothing: Every soldier wore winter uniform.

i. Physical Condition: Fair.

j. Morale: Low, because of heavy air and arty bombardment.
