2. ASSESSMENT: Cooperative and answered all questions freely but information was limited due to the fact that source was a former ROK soldier (5th Div, 27th Regt) captured by NKA. Information seems fairly reliable.
6 Mar 51, source and another former ROK soldier escaped from the NKA at CHAPOGONG-NI (DS3151) and surrendered to UN troops 7 Mar 51 at DS2345.
a. Assignment:
O/a 14 Feb 51, source and 80 other ROK soldiers were captured by NKA 6th Div at ANHUNG-MYON and immediately placed in a Training Unit. Sources were then communistically indoctrinated until 22 Feb 51.
b. Disposition:
6 Mar 51, the 6th Div OP was in village of CHAPOGONG-NI (DS3151). 3d Regt was on a hill approx 2 km E of CHAPOGONG-NI.
c. Ammo & Weapons:
O/a 22 Feb 51, PW heard from NK soldiers that 7 Corps Hq was at TAEUI-SAN (DS1664). Source was sent to this locality to pick up hand grenades for the 6th Div. Thirty men carried 30 boxes of hand grenades and these were issued to the 3d Regt.
Ammunition and explosives were kept in small caves dug at base of hill at TAEUI-SAN (DS1664). All caves were camouflaged.
6 Mar 51, 9th Co of the 3d Bn, was situated on top of Hill 692 (DS3352). Another element of the 6th Div was on Hill 614 (DS3152). At the base of Hill 692, observed 2 x 60mm mortars, 1 HMG and 1 LMG.
d. Clothing:
All troops wore winter clothing.
e. Disease:
Neither saw nor heard of any contagious diseases.
f. Food:
Was sufficient.
g. Morale:
Morale was low among troops because they were always in hiding with fear of air attacks.
h. 4th Phase Operation:
O/a 4 Mar 51, heard from NK soldiers that the 4th phase offensive would begin sometime in Mar 51. Also heard that armored units were standing by near the 38th parallel.
