PW appears to be in good physical condition. Cooperative. Knowledge of military matters is limited. He had in his possession a notebook containing military information. Recommended for further interrogation.
a. Unit Strength:
PW was recently assigned to the company as a replacement. Present strength of his plat is 18.
b. Unit Disposition:
His company was in defensive position vic of CS 558572. CCF troops retreating from the initial UN attack retreated to rear through position defended by the PW co. About 1000 troops with weapons passed through their position on the night of 9 Mar 51.
c. Unit Mission:
About six days ago, his co went into defensive position on high ground vicinity CS 5658. Three days ago the company commander ordered the troops to defend the high ground.
d. Weapons:
Co had four LMG. Small arms ammunition was resupplied from rear. Co was never short of small arms ammunition.
e. Food:
In the past six days troops ate only once a day. Rations consisted of millet meal. Combat ration was brought up from rear area at night.
f. Morale:
Morale is low due to following reasons:
Insufficient food.
Fear of artillery shelling
Troops are presently fighting because they fear the threat of death made by the company commander to those who may desert.
g. Propaganda:
PW could not hear the plane broadcast. Fellow soldiers read the surrender leaflet to him. The promise of food and clothing have demoralizing effect on the soldiers.
h. Replacement:
About two months ago, 2000 CCF replacements left MANCHURIA. The replacements arrived about a month ago and were assigned to the 38th Army.
The notebook found on the PW contained the following information:
“4th Field Army, 13th Army Group, 5th Div, Replacement Regt.”
The notebook also contained the following information:
“TIENHYON - JUNHYON - HAKO - NAMYANG FU - SUCKANG - FANGHO - FUBESHIN - TIENTSIN - SANHO KWAN - SUCHONG - SANDONG - ANDONG - KOREA”
Regarding the above, the PW states that it was route taken by the replacement group. Conscripted into the CCF about three years ago. Prior to the date he was transferred to the Replacement Regiment, he was on garrison duty in MANCHURIA.
i. Night Air Strike:
PW experienced one night air attack. The attack was ineffective.
PW was recently assigned as replacement, therefore, does not know his division and regiment designation. It is believed that he is from the 114th division, 340th regiment.
