ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 4184 23 March 1951
FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0252) 5 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: PAN, Cha Ho (26) Pvt
DUTY: Ammo Bearer
UNIT: 6th Div, 15th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 50500 Mar 51 at CHIGU-RI (DS 286431)
CAPTURED BY: 2d Bn, 9th Inf
INTERROGATED BY: Pfc AKASHI

2. ASSESSMENT:
Always having intended to desert unit, PW tried to be observant and gather as much information concerning his unit as possible, but due to nature of his duties, his information was limited. Cooperative and appears to be quite intelligent. Information seems reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
PW and two former ROK, deserted their unit 031900 Mar 51 and walked to DS 272425 where they hid until daybreak. 040600 Mar 51, all three voluntarily surrendered to 9th Inf troops by holding out a white flag.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
After 1st Co, 15th Regt (661st Unit), was driven off hill in vic of DS 245415 1 Mar 51, it retreated to CHIGU-RI (DS 273423), where stopped for one night before climbing hills directly north of CHIGU-RI.
03600 Mar 51, 1st Bn, 15th Regt was deployed on hills in vic of DS 270430 and ordered to dig 3-man foxholes to establish a defense line.

b. Strength:
Strength of each co was about 30 men, and Bn strength was 100-150 men.

c. Disposition:
Learned from Sqd Ldr that 7th Div was on the wast flank, 659th Unit on the east flank and 12th Div was holding defensive position in the immediate area.

d. Intentions:
While 1st Co was preparing its defensive line, PW plat ldr stated that the 1st Bn was to hold at all cost and wait for 4th Phase Offensive which was in process of preparation. CCF recon patrol was sent out to reconnoiter the 6th Div defensive line 2-3 days ago for the purpose of sending reinforcements. Recon patrol told the Plat Ldr the CCF were waiting for the UN forces fo penetrate deeply into the NKA lines, so they could surround the UN forces by using masses of troops kept in the rear at their disposal for this sole purpose.
Although 1st Bn was short of ammo and very weak in strength, the Co CO and PW Plat Ldr were confident that reinforcements were coming and they would not have to hold hills much longer.

e. Ammunition:
Ammo was so critical that troops were ordered not to fire until absolutely necessary and to use hand grenades in case of attack. What little ammo was resupplied was taken from Bn and Regt personnel and brought up by the ammo bearers.

f. Weapons:
1st Co: HMG (200 rd), 2 LMG (2-3 magazines) 9 PPSH SMG (50 rd each), and all men armed with Russian rifles (100 rd ea). Hvy Wpn Co had 2 x 60mm mortars, 82mm mortar and no of LMG and HMG.

g. Clothing:
Winter uniforms.

h. Food:
Insufficient fed 1-2 times a day.

i. Medical:
No contagious diseases appeared among troops. No immunization shots given.

j. Morale:
