FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0253) 5 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. EVALUATION:
Cooperative, but uncertain as to locations. Other information seems reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
1000 hr 4 Mar 51 PW and 2 others deserted when the unit was retreating N 2 km NE of UNGYO-RI (DS 3742). Half hour after escape, they voluntarily surrendered to UN troops.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Night of 3 Mar 51, 7th Co, 3d Bn, 14th Regt, 1st Div, consisting of 80 men, and 20 men of HMG Plat departed vic of PANNAMKOL (believed to be PANNAMKOL DS 4246) and arrived at hill 2 km NE of UNGYO-RI and dug in on east slope of this hill.
0700 hr 4 Mar 51, attacked UN troops, but were defeated and retreated north. There were 10 KIA and 20 KIA.

b. Mission:
Heard from Co CO that mission of the Co was to destroy the plat strength of UN Forces.

c. Disposition:
3d Bn, 14th Regt, 1st Div was at a hill 2 km E of PANNAMKOL. Dug in on west slope 3 Mar 51.
Heard from Co CO 1st Div CP was 40 km N of PANNAMKOL.
1st Bn, 14th Regt, was deployed on the right (west) flank of 3d Bn, and 1st Bn was resting in the rear 3 Mar 51.

d. Weapons:
Weapons of 3d Bn, 14th Regt, 1st DiV: 2 x 45mm mortars, 6 HMG (2000 rd ea), 2 LMG ea Plat (500-600 rd ea), 20 PPSK SMG ea Co (200 rd ea), and a rifle (and 100 rd of ammo) and 4 hand grenades each soldier.
Elements of 3d Bn, 14th Regt, were the 7th, 8th and 9th Inf Co, HMG Co, and Mortar Co. Estimated strength of 3d Bn between 500 and 600.
1st Div is composed of 14th, 2d and 3d Regt.

e. Code No:
8 Oct 5o, when PW joined 1st Div, heard from Co CO that 14th Regt is code number for 1st Regt.

f. Intentions:
5 Feb 51 3d Bn CO announced to Bn that 4th Phase operation called for setting up defense positions and 5th Phase was to be the attack. Stated that for the 5th Phase operation, RUSSIA would send them planes, tanks and arty and that CHINA would aid them with personnel.

7th Co CO: Sr Lt CHE In Sung (25)

h. Ammo Supply:
5 Feb 51 each soldier received 100 rd of rifle ammo at KANGWON-DO, KUMHWA.

i. Food Supply:
Insufficient; obtained from villages.

j. Clothing:
Soldiers wore winter uniforms (received 3 months ago).

k. Physical Condition:
Poor, because of had food and lack of sleep.

l. Medical:
Most of the soldiers suffering from diarrhea. No medical attention received.

m. Morale:
Low, because of insufficient sleep and food, arty and air bombardment and failure to receive reinforcements, such as the 7000 airplanes from CHINA, tanks, etc which leaders told soldiers were coming.
