FIELD REPORT (24 DIV LDI - 0244) 17 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW voluntarily surrendered to 19th RCT 171300 Mar 51. In good physical condition at interrogation. Cooperative, but was below average intelligence. Information should be accessed accordingly. Conscripted into CCF Oct 50. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
When 39th Army entered KOREA in Nov 50, PW was in a Med Regt (litter bearers) which consisted of 20,000 men (SIC). While 39th Army was in vic of SEOUL 20 Jan 51, Med Regt was deactivated and the personnel was split up and sent to line companies due to short age of front line troops.
3 Mar 51, 39th Army was in vic HONGCHON DS 020715 for 1 week, but due to incessant air strikes withdrew 9 km NW. Stayed in this vic for 3 days but due to incessant air strikes PW and a comrade fled their unit on 14 Mar 51 with intentions of surrendering.
Proceeded to KAPYONG CS 694864 and while crossing river at CS 698875 met 300 CCF troops of 42d Army 151600 Mar 51. The 300 CCF troops were armed with 2 x 60mm mortars (30 rd of ammo), 6 LMG and S/A.
When PW and comrade met the 300 CCF troops they were asked where they were going. Told the officer they were going to retrieve packs they had left behind.

2d Bn: Heard from friend there were mortars in 2d Bn when 39th Army entered KOREA in Nov 50.

d. Composition:
39th Army composed of 115th, 116th and 117th Div, 115th Div composed of 343d Regt and others.

e. Intention:
Heard from political officer 39th Army’s intention was to hold positions.

f. Food & Ammo:
When food is insufficient, powdered millet is eaten twice daily. Ammo also insufficient.

g. Knowledge of Other Units:
Heard friends say that 38th, 39th, 42d, 50th and 60th Armies were in KOREA.

h. Morale:
Morale low due to lack of weapons, rest, food and incessant air strikes and arty bombardment.

i. Leaflets:
Had read leaflets and desired to surrender sooner but due to strict surveillance by superiors it was difficult. Majority of CCF troops have no desire to fight.

j. Broadcast:
Heard numerous plane broadcasts. Some audible, others not. Due to being forced into KOREA, had no desire to fight. Majority of troops have the same feeling.
