FIELD REPORT (2 DIV IDI 0247) 4 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and information seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
A former ROK, was captured by CCF 1 Jan 51 at KAPYONG and joined NK 6th Div 3 Feb 51 at HWACHON. With 9 others, escaped from 5th Co while located in the mountain vic of DS283415 040100 Mar 51. After escaping they slept in farmhouse 400 m west of 5th Co and at 040500 Mar 51 walked 200 m west and surrendered to UN Forces.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION
a. Chronology:
Joined NK 6th Div 3 Feb 51 at HWACHON and assigned to 15th regt, 2d Bn, 5th Co Hq as a messenger. Duty: runner between Co and its plat.
18 Feb 51, 15th Regt moved south 20 km NE of HOENGSONG.
28 Feb 51 2d Bn was in the mt vic of DS283405. 2d Bn dug in on south slope above HOENGSONG - PYONGCHANG road. Observed 3d Bn on right flank (west) and 1st Bn on left flank (south). 2d Bn CP was at top of the mt, and 5th Co Hq was 500 m south of Bn CP.

b. Mission:
1 March 51 Co CO received order from Bn CO that Co must hold its position until preparations for 4th Phase Offensive could be completed. This preparation was to take 2 months. Being a messenger, was in the Hq when order was received, and he read it over CO shoulder.

c. Intentions:
27 Feb 51 heard from Co CO that 6th Div would receive replacements to bring Div to full strength in preparation for 4th Phase Offensive. Replacements were to come from Replacement Regt attached to 5th Corps.

d. Disposition:
2 Mar 51 2d Bn position bombarded by arty and aircraft. Bn retreated 1 km north to mt (vic DS283415) during night.
3 Mar 51 2d Bn dug in to hold off UN offensive. Heard from Co CO that 1st and 3d Bn retreated during night and were digging in on right and left flanks and that 7th Div was on 6th Div right flank (west) and 12th Div was on 6th left flank (east).
e. Escape:
On same day 2d Bn was hit by arty. PW and 9 others escaped during night with intention of surrendering to UN Forces.

f. Code No and Names:
6th Div Regt code numbers were 661 (15th Regt), 657, and 659. 15th Regt composed of 1st Bn (code name: KANGWON Do), 2d Bn (code name: KYONGGI Do) and 3d Bn (code name: CHAGONG DO).

g. Strength and Weapons:
2d Bn composed of 4th Inf Co, 5th Inf Co, 6th Inf Co, HMG Co, and Mortar Co.
Each Inf Co of 2d Bn: 3 LMG. Each man had Soviet rifle, US M-1, carbine or SMG. HMG Co had 3 HMG and Mortar Co had 3x60mm mortars. Each man in these Co was armed with Soviet rifle.
Original strength of 5th Co was 81 and present strength (3 Mar 51) is 11. Original strength of 2d Bn was 400, and present strength (3 march 51) is 120.

h. Personalities:
5th Co CO: O Chan Ok (32), Sr Lt.

i. Supply:
Food supplies were plentiful, since rice was obtained from farms.

j. clothing:
50% of troops wore winter clothing, and others wore summer uniforms.

k. Morale:
Low.
