Source was cooperative but information was limited since he traveled only at night trying to avoid contact with NK troops. Information obtained probably true.
Source was captured by the NK 12th Div, 2nd Regt at KULBONG (DS2243) on 17 Feb 51 and escaped on 21 Feb 51. Hid in farm houses and mountains until apprehended by the UN troops at HAGUN-NI on 11 Mar 51.
During the 5 days he was held captive at KULBONG, source observed the following weapons of 2d Regt, 12th Div: 10 x 81mm mortars, 3 HMG, 5 LMG, 5 x 60mm mortars, 50 x 60 and 81mm mortar shells. Also observed 2 anti-tank hand grenades (believed to be Chinese made) carried by a soldier of the 12th Div (heard from NK that it was an anti-tank hand grenade). It appeared as if they were light since it was strapped to his side.
Description of anti-tank hand grenade: 15 cm diameter, 15 cm thick with 10 cm long wooden handle in the center.
Observed at KULBONG approx 100 NK soldiers and heard that the 2nd Regt CP was here. Also observed 200 wounded NK troops being evacuated to the rear.
Heard from a NK soldier that the objective of the 12th Div was ANDONG. However, it was unsuccessful and they had to retreat. Also heard from this soldier that the 6th and 7th Div were in the KULBONG area.
Heard from a NK soldier that they captured approx 700 ROK from the 23d Regt (3d ROK Div); 27th Regt, 35th Regt and the 36th Regt of the 5th ROK Div. This NK soldier further stated that these ROK troops were sent to the rear for political training and after finishing the course, they were either sent home or were able to volunteer for the NKA.
After escaping from the NKA heard from a villager (HAGUN-NI) 5 Mar that the CCF were at POLTUKOL (phonetic) approx 12 km N of HAGUN-Nl.
This villager heard from NK soldiers that the 4th Phase was unsuccessful; therefore, they must defend their present position until the 5th Phase offensive begins sometime in April.
On 1 Mar heard from a villager that the NKA was building fires as decoys on Mts or in open valleys to attract UN night bombers.
Observed on 2 Mar in vic of HOMGOGU (vic DS 2549) a camouflaged dummy vehicle on the side of a road obviously camouflaged so UN airplanes would strafe it.
Food supply was insufficient even though rice was taken away from the farmers. Heard from the farmers that rice hidden under ground was dug up by NK and confiscated. Receipt was given for this rice and it was made payable upon the political section occupying the area.
