FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0233) 27 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Not very intelligent nor observant while with his unit, but information seems to be reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
23 Feb 51 PW separated from his unit approx 2 km S of PANGNIM-NI (vic of DS4832) due to common cold and hid in a house in village and was picked up by UN Forces 0700, 27 Feb 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Withdrawal:
O/a 19 Feb 51, 15th Div consisting of approx 8,000 men came to 8 km E of YONGWOL (DS5315) and took rest for about 3 days and started to withdraw N through PYONGCHANG (DS4735). PW was unable to follow them because of illness; so he deserted 2 km S of PANGNIM-NI.

b. Organization:
Elements of 15th Div were the 1st, 2d, 3d Rifle Regt organized at KANGGYE, o/a Oct 50. They came to South KOREA o/a 27 Jan 51 but did not engage with any UN Forces.

c. Weapons:
1st Bn of 1st Regt, 15th Div had 6 x 82mm mortars with 200 rd, 15 HMG with 1000 rd ea, 10 LMG with 500 rd ea, 4 AT rifles, 20 PPSH SMG in each Co (1000 rd ea) and every soldier had a Soviet make rifle with 250 rd and 5 hand grenades. Strength of 1st Bn was estimated to be 450 men.

d. Other Units:
20 Feb 51 PW observed elements of 1st NK Div, approx 100 men, at MACHAL Coal Mine located approx 16 km E of YONGWOL heading toward YONGWOL. They had Soviet make rifles (PW identified them by talking to a soldier of this unit).

e. Ammo Supply:
12 Feb 51 each soldier received 50 rd of rifle ammo 28 km N of HONGCHON. This was the first and last time they received ammo once they left NK.

f. Food Supply:
2 meals per day. Obtained from villages, was insufficient.

g. Clothing:
Troops were in winter uniform.

h. Physical Condition:
Very bad because of insufficient sleep, food and bad weather. 5 men in his Co were suffering from frostbite.

i. Medical:
4 men in his Co were suffering from high fever.

j. Morale:
Very low, because of heavy air and Arty bombardment.
