Cooperative but information about the 1st Div was limited. PW was not familiar with any place names. Information seems to be reliable except for unit localities and directions.
Deserted his unit 27 Feb 51, intending to join the ROK. Captured by UN troops as he was traveling southward in vic DS3442.
a. Disposition & Intentions
2d Regt of the 1st Div arrived in vic of DS3442 27 Feb 51. 1st Div CP was approx 4 km N of the 2d Regt. Heard from Plat Ldr that the 1st Div’s objective was to go to CHUCHON area. Elements of the 1st Div were the 1st, 2d and 3d Regt.
2d Regt deployed its Bn on three hills in vic DS3442, 3d Bn descended a hill and moved into a small village located at the east base of this hill. After arriving vic DS3442, the 3d Bn counted its’ men and its’ strength was 416. 3d Bn descended the hill with intentions to attack UN troops.
b. Weapons
Weapons in the 3d Bn were: 3 x 82mm mortars per Co, 6 Anti-tank rifles, 2 HMG per Co, (3 magazines ea, 1 LMG per Plat (2 magazines), Sqd and Plat ldrs had PPSH SMG (1 magazine per)) and others had Russian rifles (130 rd ea). Each man carried 2 hand grenades.
c. Organization
3d Bn composed of the 7th, 8th and 9th Cos, Anti-tank rifle Co and HMG Co.
d. Other Units
When the 1st Div arrived vic DS3442, observed elements (100 men NK) of an unidentified division in the same area.
e. CCF
O/a 19 Feb 51 observed about 1,000 CCF troops moving northward in vic 28 kms N of DS3442.
f. 4th Phase Operation
O/a 10 Feb 51 heard from sqd ldr that the 4th Phase Offensive would be the final offensive to drive UN Forces out of KOREA and that it has not begun as yet.
g. Withdrawal
1st Div was engaged in combat in PYONGCHANG area and after being defeated, retreated northward. Does not know the actual direction of retreat but stated that they walked 24 km to vic DS3442.
h. Clothing
All troops wore winter uniforms in 3d Bn.
i. Medical
None observed among troops. PW heard of some civilian suffering from an unk type of disease in village located approx 12 km N of DS3442.
j. Food
Insufficient
k. Morale
Low, because the men didn’t receive enough combat training.
l. Reinforcements
O/a 17 Feb 51 PW heard from his sqd ldr that Russia was going to supply Communist Forces in KOREA with 10,000 trucks.
