Voluntarily surrendered with 2 others to elements of 19th RCT. In good physical condition at interrogation. Cooperative but of below average intelligence. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology:
O/a 081900 Mar 51 the 8th, 9th and Hv Wpn Co (3d Bn) withdrew NE for approx 6 km arriving vic Hill 578 CS 628590 early morning of 9 Mar 51. 8th and Hv Wpn Co prepared defense position on W slope of Hill 578 CS 628590. 9th Co proceeded N for approx 1/3 mile and dug in at base of Hill 312 CS 629606.
O/a 091930 Mar 51 3d Plat of the 9th Co (13 men) was dispatched to reinforce 8th Co on Hill 578. Upon arriving, received heavy arty and S/A fire. During shelling 2 KIA in his platoon. O/a 092030 Mar 51 the 3d Plat became completely disorganized and retreated N towards Hill 312.
During retreat PW met Asst Co CO who ordered him to return to his position. Enroute to Hill 578 took the opportunity to desert his Co and hid in fox hole and surrendered to UN forces vic CS Hill 578 at 101500 Mar 51.

Observed 2x82mm mortars on peak of Hill 578 CS 628590.
d. Food and Ammo:
Food locally procured. Food insufficient (no food for 4 days). 40 rd of ammo issued per day. All hand grenades were turned in at Co Hq 9 Mar 51.
e. Mission:
Present mission is to fight a delaying action until reinforcements arrive.
f. Replacements:
O/a 10 Feb 51 heard from political leader that the 2d Army Group will depart (o/a 15 Feb 51) to reinforce current CCF strength now in KOREA. O/a 25 Feb 51 heard from political leader that the 2d Army Group will bivouac for 10 days prior to being committed.
g. Morale:
Troops demoralized by incessant air strike and arty bombardment. Also lack of food and proper shelter.
